X Copy – 1985 Toyota MR2

Update: Nearly two years on, reader Stephen commented on the original post that he purchased the car for $1400. Now with 156,000 miles, the car is still doing well, though it had a few minor needs at purchase: a missing (now replaced) bolt on the coolant pump had caused a leak, and a small hole in the floor and sill rot are on the short list for a date with a welder. Other than that, he’s quite happy with the purchase – here’s a picture to show what it’s like now (note one of the great things about small cars: pulled up on the wrong side? no problem! just reach across!):

Original post: For any enthusiast of small sports cars with a small, rev-happy engine, the MR2 has to be on the list. It’s like an X1/9 without the drama (or as much emotion) – that mid-mounted Yamaha-designed four-cylinder is probably one of the nicer four-cylinders to make it through the mid-1980s emissions-controlled malaise era – the nearest competitor had a not-so-awesome 1970s Iron Duke 4-cylinder, and other sporting convertibles ran engines dating back to the 1950s and 1960s. Beyond that, you get tight handling and two handy little trunks, with the frunk cool enough to keep your beer cold and the trunk warm enough to keep your potluck casserole warm. One of 1576 – 1988 Toyota MR2 Supercharged

Toyota’s MR2 scored on a lot of characteristics – a sharp, light platform; wedgy 1980s styling, even if it is awfully similar to other cars of the same period; a truly enjoyable powertrain; and legendary reliability and durability. Of course, like many 1980s Japanese cars, it had a strong propensity to rust and a rather plasticky interior. And that’s the basic MR2, to which you can add more 1980s features like t-tops and a wedgy spoiler, or a pop-out moonroof. But if you’re looking for more power, the factory offered a supercharged version that was good for an additional 33hp and dropped the 0-60mph time by about 1.5 seconds. Unfortunately for the budget-oriented car enthusiast, they’re not too readily available, but for today let’s take a look at this 1988 Toyota MR2 Supercharged for sale for $3500 in Medford, OR.

Japanese Classics – 1989 Toyota MR2

For car nuts, there’s a lot to dislike about Toyota – they’ve done a lot to promote a kind of mainstream banality in cars you won’t see here, and even when they talk about building something interesting, it turns out boring. However, there are odd occasions when you can tell the board/committee/entity was not paying attention, and things like the Scion FR-S, Corolla XR-S, or MR2 sneak through the approval process. Perhaps it’s that one old guy who was on the 2000GT team, and his memory occasionally makes Toyota do something crazy. Like, for example, this 1989 Toyota MR2, now for sale for $2950 in San Diego, CA.
