With the madness surrounding Porsche 911 pricing, enthusiasts have been looking around, trying to find what they can still afford. And of course, speculators have been trying to pick up on the next big thing as well. Apparently, some of them have concluded that the Porsche 914, as much of a non-Porsche as the Dino 246 GTS was a non-Ferrari, is next to skyrocket. Sadly, that means a good driver 914 is getting harder and harder to find for us regular folks. Fortunately, there are still a few out there, including this 1974 Porsche 914, with bidding at $1025 and 1 1/2 days left to go in Taylor, MI.
This first picture makes it look surprisingly good, but it doesn’t seem to represent what’s shown in the other pictures. This must have been taken after a thorough cleaning and detail job sometime in the past, because the wheels now look like they have some corrosion, and the paint is faded and rough instead of shiny. Either way, as long as most of the car is rust-free, this still looks like a good buy.
This started as a California car, then spent several years in a garage, and has been the seller’s daily driver since March 2011. That suggests most of the mechanicals should be well-tested, but at the same time, did the seller really drive this car in snow and salt? It can’t have been much fun with the ineffective heater owners of most air-cooled VW products seem to complain about. If this car is a little rough for you, consider that this 1971 914 just sold for $3409, so a little more money does get you an easier project.
It’s not clear what the seller meant to illustrate with this last picture, but it appears that in a 914, you can rev it up to 7000rpm as long as you avoid that dangerous yellow zone between 5600 and 5800 rpm! Using our thinking caps a little more, there is visible oxidation on the steering wheel, suggesting the car’s interior has had a lot of sun. The car does need some rust repair in some of the typical 914 places, like in the hell hole, trunk, and sills. But those are a samll price to pay for your own blue chip investment!
