Baby’s Back – 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce

May 23, 2016

After a protracted period of downtime following its interstate move, the RustyButTrusty Alfa Spider took a time-out under a cover in the garage. Its issues were minor, but it finally went down to the local Alfa doctor in Portland to get some attention. Fortunately, the minor issues included an air leak causing a racing idle, along with a chunk missing out of a long-cracked donut, and some pinging under part throttle. With these problems resolved (at relatively small cost, fortunately), it’s eager to please again. Which brings us to an important point – the 105/115-chassis Spider is one of the best and most cost-effective ways to live the Alfa experience. Check out this 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce for sale for $4500 in Napa County, CA.

Rusty, Not Trusty – 1964 Innocenti S Spider

May 16, 2016

The Innocenti Spider is a great example of something the Italians did really well – put a fancy frock on a set of plain mechanicals. In this case, you get the greasy parts from a Mark 2 Sprite/Midget – a 1098cc A-series inline four cylinder and four speed transmission. In the 1950s and 1960s, Innocenti was best known for its Lambretta scooters and a bunch of rebadged BMC products, but this car can drop the names of some very influential people and companies in the Italian car business – it was designed by Tom Tjaarda for Ghia and built by OSI. The original Spider did not include the S in its model designation, featuring the 948cc engine of the bug/frogeye Sprite, while the S got the larger engine and front disc brakes. The car sold well in Italy, but couldn’t compete well in foreign markets due to price, and as demand waned, Innocenti transformed the car into a hardtop. But for today, we’ll have to be happy with a folding roof, or perhaps no roof at all – check out this 1964 Innocenti S Spider for sale for $2500 in Annandale, VA.

Small Sport – 1974 Fiat 128

May 13, 2016

Against its other competitors of the time – Golf/Polo, Renault 5 – the Fiat 128 always seems the sporting pick of the bunch. Yes, it’s not terribly fast, and it’s not the most solidly built, but it’s probably the most fun, engaging drive. And sure, you could write that off to the nonsense that every Italian car is part Ferrari – they aren’t, which you’d know if you’d ever driven a Lancia Beta sedan – but in the case of the 128, it does seem to have more spark than your average 1970s econobox. Aside from great handling and a lively engine, they also have some of the most comfortable seats of the time. With that, let’s check out this 1974 Fiat 128 for sale for $1500 in Bois D’Arc, France MO. Thanks to reader Eli, the seller of the car, for this submission.
