WRX Wannabe – 1974 Ford Capri

January 2, 2011

As long as people have been driving old cars, they’ve been updating them to match contemporary trends. That’s how you get 1950s sports cars in beautiful brown with shag carpet and vinyl seats. And it seems that, love it or hate it, the recent interest in “patina”, even if that means worn around the edges, we’ve started realizing that in the long run, putting shag and brown paint on your car is not worth the effort. So it’s weird when you see WRX blue on a classic car, even if it does kind of work on some of the 1970s designs. Find our car in eastern Oregon for $900.

That said, given this car already has what it’s got, I’d say go all out and find some 1970s wheels… gold mesh wheels so you’re going with that blue/gold theme, but keeping it period. The Rostyle wheels are actually pretty cool on this car, but once you’ve updated the paint, keeping the other stuff the same is not the greatest option. The good news is, the bolt pattern cross references to old Alfas and probably other Fords, so you’ve got a ready choice of good wheels if you can’t find one from another old Capri.

Strich Acht – 1973 Mercedes 280C

January 1, 2011

Mercedes have never held as great appeal for me as some other cars, I think because they didn’t have sporting intentions like my preferred Italians and Germans. That said, coupes can be pretty sporty, and the 2.8 liter engine in the top-of-the line W114 Mercedes coupes is a twincam six, so there must be something fun about it. Also, as Mercedes goes off on a path of broader appeal to people who like McMansions, people who like SUVs, and other things like that, it’s getting easier and easier to appreciate the over-engineered, last-forever approach they took to their cars up through the 1980s. Combined with the positive associations the W114/W115 bodystyle has for me (the family of a childhood friend had a red 280 sedan I think I mentioned in a past post), I find myself looking at these and wanting to see what kind of a weekend driver they would be. This post’s example is an elegant white 280C in Mira Loma for a paltry $3500.

What a formal roof line – elegant and yet different from the later, sleeker W123 and W124 coupes. Unfortunately, the seller decided to post night photos, but since it’s a white car you can at least see there’s no major rust penetration. Also, you can hope for limited rust since the car’s down in inland southern California, but at the same time there’s no telling how shiny or dull the paint is. At least it’s reflecting the flash, so it’s got some gloss left in it. According to the seller it’s dent-free and everything works well, so that’s a good start.

Euro Sport Sedan Special – Patrician vs. Plebeian

October 30, 2010

Well, it’s been an awfully long time since the last post. Having caught up on all my favorite blogs, I’m now using my spare seconds to fish around for gems again, and here are a couple.

Who knew you could get a 2002 for so cheap, much less a tii?? For only $3100, this car in Santa Cruz, CA definitely has to be a genuine, original, numbers matching tii that would make the blue & white cravatted judges at your local BMW concours giggle with glee. I briefly tried finding a spotter’s guide to tell if this is a real tii, but Google only turned up one good one, and most of the items it listed are not visible in this picture. However, it does have a fuel-injection intake plenum, so it’s a tii in practice. I’ve liked this color combo since I test drove a 1602 in the same colors, and still holds up pretty well.
