Trunkless – 1970 Opel GT

May 24, 2013

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been fascinated with Opels. Maybe it’s because they’re orphans here, maybe it’s because of the curvy lines of the GT and Manta, or maybe it’s because one of my first car rides in Germany was in the back seat of my grandfather’s Opel (probably a Commodore Coupe, although it’s hard for me to say since I was only 5!). Either way, while they’re mainstream cars in Europe, here they are cult favorites, of which the most popular model is the GT. Today’s feature is not so rusty, and probably not so trusty either, but the fun is in getting there, no? It’s a 1970 model here in South Charlotte, NC for $2500.

Second Place – 1979 Renault LeCar

May 23, 2013

Since I had a ride in a friend’s mom’s LeCar back in the eighties in Montreal, I’ve been fascinated by these cars. They squeeze in a significant amount of space for their footprint, and if they have a ragtop as hers did, they feel even more spacious. Heck, you could probably haul a bunch of lumber in there just by having it sticking out the roof. Funny enough, this car only got second place in the European Car of the Year awards. The Audi 80 won out, although the Renault 5 absolutely won out in sales and production lifespan – the Audi only ran from 1972-1978, while the Renault lasted until 1996 in Europe, went on to license production in various developing countries, and is still in production in Iran! Since we Americans are not allowed to import anything from Iran, we’ll have to settle for this bright yellow LeCar, listed for $2300 in Vallejo, CA as part of a combination “Ebay parts business” and car package.

Woohoo, Cheap Meat! 1977 Mercedes 280SE

January 6, 2013

Update, 1/6/14: Now down to $595, and a link to the article from SFGate, it’s not obvious from reading the new listing why this car is not selling. Anybody have details?

Original post, 12/19/13: Sometimes, deals seem too good to be true, and other times, they look good but likely true. Such is the case with today’s car – in fact, cheap luxury cars seems to be today’s theme – a 1977 Mercedes 280SE for sale in Morgan Hill, CA for a mere $775. It’s a European market car that’s been off the road for 9 years, although the condition gives no clue as to the reason.
