Japanese Coupes – 1974 Toyota Celica 18RG and 1972 Mazda 1200

February 28, 2014

Recently, the niche Japanese cars that were interesting oddball remnants from a time when their manufacturers were still finding their way in foreign (to them) markets have skyrocketed in price, such that even some projects are no longer affordable to the average enthusiast on a budget (here’s looking at you, Mazda RX series cars). And that’s really a shame, because the Japanese did produce some interesting and sometimes very weird cars. While the Toyota Celica was not particularly weird, it was an attractive little coupe that had some interesting features. Moreover, through attrition they’ve become quite rare, and there’s nothing like not seeing yourself coming and going to give you the warm and fuzzies, and super-extra-double points for being able to pull that off in a Toyota. You can find this 1974 Toyota Celica ST for sale for $2500 in Everett, WA (and listed under Vancouver, BC for some reason).

RustyButTrusty on the Street – Thunderbird, Celica, and Ranchero

November 12, 2013

It’s time for a long-overdue episode of RustyButTrusty on the Street. Daylight savings means there’s less time in the day to photograph finds with good lighting, so the pickings have been slimmer. But there are still interesting cars out there, including this impeccable 1964 Ford Thunderbird Landau running its original California black license plates. This car is a resident of this neighborhood, and does appear to be frequently driven.

Toyota Coupes #2 – 1979 Toyota Celica GT

October 2, 2013

What a difference a decade makes! While yesterday’s Corona Mark 2 coupe was very much of the 1960s, with its handsome sloping roofline and polished metal trim, Toyota had moved up in the world towards solidifying its position as one of the world’s major automakers. By 1979, there was a successful line of pickups, along with the Corolla, Corona, and Cressida sedans. The Celica was added in 1971, and in 1978 the second generation A40/A50 Celica was introduced. You can find this 1979 RA42 Toyota Celica Liftback for $3000 in Overland Park, KS.
