The Austin A40 was a compact sedan designed to handle British post-war roads, but also to conquer markets abroad with its record-breaking (according to period advertising) 42bhp OHV engine. Shown together with responsible, pipe-smoking family men, listed at £467, it was a rather frumpy-looking thing, designed to be durable, and considered to have respectable acceleration for the time. However, handling was not impressive, and 42bhp probably didn’t conquer much more than the odd 2CV or Fiat 500. Nonetheless, there is something kind of fun about the bulbous styling of this A40, so what can we do to make it more fun? Check out this 1954 Austin A40 Somerset for sale for $2500 in Seattle, WA.

March 8, 2015Bad Boob – 1964 Vanden Plas Princess
September 28, 2014Thanks to our self-imposed price ceiling, you’ll probably never see a Rolls Royce here on these pages. And while you might have heard that the Vanden Plas Princess was at one point powered by a 4-liter Rolls Royce FB60 engine with a pretty stout 175hp, this is not that car, but its predecessor. That said, for the fancy pants trim level of the Austin Westminster, you’ll get an elegantly trimmed interior, with burr walnut, leather and high-grade carpeting. And since this is a 1964 version, you get the upgraded brakes, drop-down rear picnic tables, and the 120hp version of the Austin C-series inline six. Take a look at this 1964 Austin Princess Vanden Plas for sale for $4500 in Cool Ridge, WV.
Ur-Minivan – 1961 Austin Mini Van
July 23, 2014Another thing that adds to the interest factor for cars is if they’re unusually small (unusually big is cool too, but since the size of the average North American car is pretty big anyways, that becomes impractical pretty quickly), or if they’re in a rarely-seen utilitarian version. Think of station wagons, half-cars/utes, and panel vans based on wagons – what isn’t cool about those? Okay, outward vision isn’t… anyhow, here’s a vehicle that covers a trifecta of cool-car criteria. It’s unusually small, it’s a wagon-based panel van, and it’s fun around the corners – check out this 1961 Austin Mini van for sale for $2500 in Chino Hills, CA.
