RustyButTrusty on the Street – Honolulu Edition

October 17, 2015

A short trip to Hawaii yielded a couple of interesting finds. Evidently, the climate and distance from the mainland does not get in every enthusiast’s way of enjoying older cars. Beyond what’s captured below, some older American cars, a pair of Pinzgauers, a beater Beetle convertible and a mid-1970s Porsche 911S in running but rusty condition were pleasant surprises among all the rental Jeeps. The first find was this unusual pair – a Nash Metropolitan which was promoting a business next to a Subaru Loyale. The Subaru must have been a recent arrival from the mainland since it was in immaculate shape.

Whirlwind – 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado

October 5, 2015

Let’s face it, when you think of a classic car with some outstanding technological features for the period and appeal for the entire family, Oldsmobile coupes are not necessarily the first thing that come to mind. But look a little deeper, and you’ll realize that not only were these one of GM’s most successful designs of the period, they were also one of the out-of-the-box GM cars of the 1960s (along with the Corvair, Tempest, and more), and being American, were only available with an automatic transmission. Conveniently, they’re also back in style with the influence of Mad Men on our aesthetic sensibilities. Check out this 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado for sale for $4500 in Winnsboro, TX.

A Ford for Peanuts – 1960 Ford Falcon Two-Door Wagon

September 19, 2015

There are two definite schools of thought about the current state of the automobile. New cars are complex, amazing machines with incredible levels of safety and longevity, and at the same time automakers are still fighting reliability and quality issues. Manufacturers have a pretty good grasp on what the majority of the population wants – a sedan, truck or SUV with a decent amount of power, good fuel economy for their size and weight, and some form of self-shifting transmission. The other side is that all new cars are boring, and they don’t make them like they used to. Old cars are simple, easy to fix, and with a bit more care, can be quite reliable. You also get a plethora of body styles that are no longer available – like two-door wagons, two-door sedans, and compact pickups. And that brings us to today’s feature car, this 1960 Ford Falcon Two-Door wagon for sale for $3750 in Tigard, OR.
