RustyButTrusty on the Street – Honolulu Edition

October 17, 2015

A short trip to Hawaii yielded a couple of interesting finds. Evidently, the climate and distance from the mainland does not get in every enthusiast’s way of enjoying older cars. Beyond what’s captured below, some older American cars, a pair of Pinzgauers, a beater Beetle convertible and a mid-1970s Porsche 911S in running but rusty condition were pleasant surprises among all the rental Jeeps. The first find was this unusual pair – a Nash Metropolitan which was promoting a business next to a Subaru Loyale. The Subaru must have been a recent arrival from the mainland since it was in immaculate shape.

G-g-g-ghost, Scoob! – 1989 Subaru GL-10 Turbo Sedan

September 15, 2015

For your average car nut, it’s hard to not like the idea of a 1980s Subaru – turbo power, angular 1980s design, some restrained aero pieces, full-time four wheel drive, and some sweet graphics proclaiming the strengths of the car, in the hope that someone driving behind to you will get up really close and say to themselves “full-time 4wd Subaru GL-10 and two mudflaps with 4WD on them? where do I sign?” just before rear-ending you. Much like yesterday’s early 1980s Escort, attrition has claimed many of these, only it’s more exciting if you find a good one since, well, it’s not a 1980s Escort. Check out this 1989 Subaru Loyale GL-10 Sedan for sale for $2500 in Portland, OR.

PNW Special – 1990 Subaru Loyale 4WD Turbo Wagon plus bonus Brat

September 2, 2013

Back before Subaru broke into the mainstream in the late 1990s with its Legacy Outback, it was making something unusual that seems commonplace now – a turbocharged all-wheel-drive car. Granted, some parts of the concept had been done before by cars like the Jensen FF and Ford Mustang with Ferguson AWD, but these were very expensive, limited production, or both. Subaru brought this technology to the compact class in the early 1970s, well before the Audi Quattro or AMC Eagle. While on a recent trip to the Pacific Northwest (PNW), I was reminded of my search for one of these to use as a daily driver in the late 1990s, and decided to find one to feature here. Even back then they were hard to find, and our car today is one of the few remaining turbo Loyale wagons in Multnomah County, near Portland, OR for $1250.
