Most Popular – 1980 MGB

January 23, 2014

A not-so-recent article in Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car listed the world’s most popular (by quantity built) open cloth top roadsters. It bridged a whole variety of the class, all the way from the MG Midget to the Mercedes R107 SL, with many in between, and serves as good inspiration for a couple of postings. While the Mazda Miata was the most popular car on the list, second place went to the MGB. While many of these have moved out of reach for the collector on a budget, it is still possible to find some nice-looking examples at a reasonable price, particularly if you’re willing to compromise on things like giant, black battering ram bumpers and a color that makes you want to reach for a packet of Swiss Miss (or worse, but this is a mostly family friendly website). You can find this 1980 MGB for sale in Kansas City, MS for $4000.

Who Doesn’t Like Hardtops? – 1968 Pontiac Bonneville

January 22, 2014

Continuing the fascination with older American sedans, here’s where GM really excelled in design – with its hardtop sedans. Who needs a silly b-pillar holding your roof up when style is in question? These cars really let you have it all – the style of a coupe, the practicality of a sedan, the power of a sports car, and the handling of Grandma’s chesterfield. They’ve become fairly unusual today, although many manufacturers strive to emulate the look of a pillarless sedan by blacking out the b-pillar. Today’s example of this body style is a 1968 Pontiac Bonneville, for sale in Turlock, CA (east of San Francisco) for $2800.

Shopping on Holiday – 1964 Imperial LeBaron

January 21, 2014

Continuing today’s theme of shopping while you’re on vacation, apologies are in order for not finding a Porsche Speedster buried in a mine tunnel. Although if you found one, that would be no fun, because then you’d have to drag it out of its hole, catalog everything, and then put it up for auction and rake in some ridiculous six-figure sum from the same guy who never heard of the tulip craze. So to save you from that miserable fate, here’s a 1964 Imperial LeBaron for sale in Jamestown, CA for $2500 (clearly, the empire has fallen).
