Rare Alternative – 1974 Jensen Healey

September 16, 2013

The Jensen Healey roadster was one of those ideas that sounds great in theory, but falls apart in the execution. Take a Lotus engine, combine with some mechanical bits from cars like the Vauxhall Viva and Chrysler’s fine UK model range, a tidy if not very creative body style, and 1970s British labor strife, and presto! Snark aside, though, most of the surviving cars have to be the best of the bunch, and many have had fixes applied to overcome the weak points that made them less-than-ideal daily drivers. One such survivor is this 1974 Jensen Healey, available for $4000 in San Francisco, CA.

Pick ‘n’ Pull Palooza – 1971 Fiat Spider and 1986 Fiat X1/9

September 15, 2013

The local Pick ‘n’ Pull junkyards 9excuse me, automotive recycling centers) up in western Washington seem to be having a good run of Fiats lately, so it’s become worthwhile to highlight some of the offerings. Fiat spiders are still a great bargain compared to other comparable cars, and as a result, the earlier ones with small bumpers and more elegant detailing are becoming harder and harder to find. This 1971 spider should have the 1608cc twincam engine under the early smooth hood, and is available in Olympia, WA for $1100.

RustyButTrusty On The Street – BMW and VW

September 15, 2013

Here’s another installation of RustyButTrusty On The Street, celebrating what you can spot on a walk around the ‘hood. Our first find is this square-taillight BMW 2002, modified with 1971-73 long bumper in the back, Recaro driver’s seat, and a spoiler in the front with a tube bumper for protection from careless parkers. It’s also got some sweet 1980s mesh wheels, and nicely-aged Verona red paint. If you’re an old car owner, isn’t there a small part of you that would like to have a bumper designed to damage the other car first?
