Voiture de luxe – 1982 Peugeot 604 TD

Well, after that run of more mainstream cars, I want to get back on the wagon of unusual rides. Since I’ve never been one to go less than full throttle in that direction (witness my choice in cars), I’ve found a Peugeot 604 to feature today. These cars have always kind of reminded me of a contemporary Mercedes in terms of their general proportions, and my experience with them is limited to spotting one on the street and saying “hey! that’s a Peugeot 604!”, causing general confusion and eye-rolling around me. I also looked at one once in a consignment lot in Santa Clara, when I was young, idealistic, and thought I could convert all my friends into liking weird cars (the score? one friend bought a Saab 900 turbo, and I changed to guiding my friends to the right cars for them).

Anyway, the story of the 604 is pretty interesting – this was the first large executive-level car they made since the 1930s, and even though it was not a great commercial success, they made money on every one since it was based on the 504. The ride also compared well to an XJ6, although the power certainly didn’t. Most relevant to our feature car, the Peugeot 604 TD was nearly the first turbodiesel production car, narrowly beaten out by the US-market Mercedes 300SD by a matter of months. One Thing Leads To Another – 1982 Ford Mustang GT

Given my recent crack about backwards-ballcap-types driving Fox-body Mustangs, I figured the proper act of contrition would be to feature one. After all, there has to be something good in a car if it has such massive appeal. I also have to admit there’s something fun which I’ve never explored in having a common classic, for which there are a plethora of aftermarket parts to create your own version. And hey, I’ve never owned a V8-powered car – some people would say I haven’t really lived yet.

As I was looking through Mustangs, I found the best deals were available on the earlier cars. You might assume this is because in the early 1980s, the new smog rules and the recent fuel crisis were still having pretty serious impacts on cars’ power outputs. However, by 1982, Ford had already reinstated the 302 ci V8 in the Mustang, producing 157hp (competitive with, say, an Alfa GTV6). Using the aforementioned aftermarket parts, or simply upgrades from later models, you shouldn’t have a hard time going beyond this if you want. And you get to have the clean, square simplicity of the earlier Fox-body cars, before the redesign made it look like a microwaved stick of butter. Find today’s car in Omaha, NE for $3500.

Needs more VeeDub – 1984 Volkswagen GTI

I’ve written about the first-generation GTI in the past, so that and the recent article on Cabriolets should give you some insight into what’s exciting about these cars from a RustyButTrusty perspective. That in mind, I’m going to skip the rambling and get straight into our subject, a 1984 Volkswagen GTI available for $1500 in Austin, TX.

Check it out – with only 60,000 miles, it’s got reasonably shiny paint and looks pretty straight. How many of these 26-year-old hot hatches are there still around that can say that? If the mileage is correct (trust but verify!), you’ll be experiencing this car the way someone would have in about 1989 (after about 5 years of 12K/year driving). Seller is not very verbose in his ad, but allows that the car has only had one owner. With any luck you’ll get maintenance records and more – sounds like he’s finally giving up his weekend toy.
