Vocho en las EEUU – 1971 VW Beetle

February 19, 2015

With the millions of VW Beetles sold in this country and the world, they’re still pretty ubiquitous. So it’s hard to find what you might call an unusual version of the Beetle. For people north of the Mexican border, this is any Beetle built after 1979. The latest versions even had fuel injection and a catalytic converter, which must be pretty similar to final Canadian/US spec. Mexican built Beetles have an interesting mixture of features compared to the standard Canadian/US Beetles, and late in their production run lost things such as the flow-through ventilation system and any chrome fittings. Check out this this 1971 VW Beetle for sale for $3600 in Vancouver, WA.

Want Some Candy? Stretched 1972 VW Bus

February 12, 2015

Have you ever seen a car on the street that drew your attention, and you maybe wanted to snap a picture, but worried about whether the occupants might have a violent reaction? Well, today’s feature could have been a RustyButTrusty feature vehicle, but for the concern that photography might have alarmed its inhabitants. Fortunately, online classifieds come to the rescue, and that’s how you get to see this 1972/3 VW Bus stretch (don’t call it a limo) for sale for $2000 in Berkeley, CA.

For quite a while, this bus was parked outside the day care center attended by the RustyButTrusty junior intern, provoking mild concern from the center’s management and worrisome parents. Turns out it’s pretty harmless – more of an art camper in the works than a residence. Now you might ask yourself, who’s selling this vehicle? Thanks to photography, you can see it’s the friendly artist above. And why is he selling? Well (and this will make a deal-sniffer’s ears perk up), he’s leaving for several months’ travel in early March and doesn’t have time to keep it. Needless to say, there are issues, but power is not among them as it’s been converted to Ford Ranger 2.9 V6 power, with fuel injection, and the standard VW transaxle with manual gearshift. Compression is tolerable, but the van is said to have some wiring issues which are causing it not to start.

In a Eurovan, Down by the River – 1993 VW Eurovan

January 7, 2015

There’s not much out there if you’re a row-your-own kind of driver who needs to have a van to accommodate family, furniture, or other bulky items. If you narrow it even further to a vehicle you can sleep and eat in fairly comfortably, there’s not much left, particularly in the modern car segment. So it’s nice to find a VW Eurovan with manual transmission. These early Eurovans didn’t have the VR6 of the late 90s to early 00s vans; instead, they featured a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder, ostensibly to make up for the power deficit of Vanagons and Type 3 buses. Unfortunately, they were not outrageously successful, and the manuals are pretty thin on the ground. Of course, you can trust San Francisco to have any oddball for sale, so check out this 1993 VW Eurovan for sale for $3500 in San Francisco, CA.
