Snow White – 1988 VW Scirocco 16V

There were lots of popular things to do in the 1980s. For car enthusiasts, one of those things was copying Ferrari Testarossas. Pickup trucks got side strakes. Alfas got 5-spoke star wheels from the factory. And plenty of cars got pop-up headlights, though the Testarossa was not the only one influencing this trend. Tuner cars got wide, boxy fenders with wheels to match and louvers over their tail lights. For a taste of some (questionable) 1980s aesthetics blended with some updates, check out this 1988 VW Scirocco 16V for sale for $3500 in Portland, OR.

Supercabby – 1989 VW Cabriolet G60

Pigeon-holed as a cheerleader’s car in its first life, the VW Cabriolet has been uncovered by many early-water-cooled VW enthusiasts as the good car it is – a 4-place convertible with decent power (especially with the manual) and good passive safety for the time. Of course, stock power is never enough for some folks, and that’s why there’s another popular pastime among VW fans – dropping in a later VW factory powertrain to add power. So that brings us to this 1989 VW Cabriolet for sale for $3000 in Revere, MA.

2 Waters Please – 1982 VW Quantum and 1978 VW Rabbit

Until recently, VW was on pretty solid ground as a growing presence on the North American market, but let’s take a look back at a time when VW’s existence here was very much in question. The North American Quantum definitely epitomized that time, with a pokey 1-7-liter 4-cylinder, awkward styling, and a marketing strategy that didn’t know where it wanted to be – frugal and well-made like a Beetle, or spartan-lux like most of its European contemporaries. Indeed, there’s little except maybe the goodwill and better service network from the Beetle days to differentiate this from a contemporary Renault, and we all know where Renault went in the late 1980s. So let’s check out a remnant from those early water-cooled days, this 1982 VW Quantum for sale for $1299 in Portland, OR.
