Voiture de luxe – 1982 Peugeot 604 TD

March 22, 2010

Well, after that run of more mainstream cars, I want to get back on the wagon of unusual rides. Since I’ve never been one to go less than full throttle in that direction (witness my choice in cars), I’ve found a Peugeot 604 to feature today. These cars have always kind of reminded me of a contemporary Mercedes in terms of their general proportions, and my experience with them is limited to spotting one on the street and saying “hey! that’s a Peugeot 604!”, causing general confusion and eye-rolling around me. I also looked at one once in a consignment lot in Santa Clara, when I was young, idealistic, and thought I could convert all my friends into liking weird cars (the score? one friend bought a Saab 900 turbo, and I changed to guiding my friends to the right cars for them).

Anyway, the story of the 604 is pretty interesting – this was the first large executive-level car they made since the 1930s, and even though it was not a great commercial success, they made money on every one since it was based on the 504. The ride also compared well to an XJ6, although the power certainly didn’t. Most relevant to our feature car, the Peugeot 604 TD was nearly the first turbodiesel production car, narrowly beaten out by the US-market Mercedes 300SD by a matter of months. Find our second-place example in Bakersfield, CA (north of Los Angeles) for $1750.

Bargain Buy – 1978 Saab 99 Turbo

January 8, 2010

See below the link for an update to this post.

So while I normally totally disregard investment value of a car (obviously!), I do sometimes wish I could get something back out of the cars that are harder to work on. Apparently, some things are harder to do on a 99, although a clutch job is one of the easiest automotive repairs ever. As an early example of a turbocharged production car, you get some level of exclusivity, collectibility, and miserable turbo lag until BANG you’re off. Just hope the roads aren’t wet or you’ll be off into a bush if you don’t have a firm grip on the wheel. That said, I remember having a lot of fun in my parents’ ’86 9000 turbo, which had lag up until about 3000rpm.

Anyway, on to the subject of this post. It’s a well-used looking car on which the 6th digit has rolled over on its odometer twice. However, Saabs can usually handle it, and it appears to be a fairly complete car with TURBO badges, original trim, Inca wheels, and 6 mudflaps. It’s missing the cool turbo graphics, but with silk-screening technology (I think that’s what you use to repro stickers) what it is today, these can probably be remade, if someone hasn’t already done it. Find it at the Swedish Auto Factory under Cars for Sale for $2000 in Santa Clara, CA.

Saad about Saab – 1988 Saab 900 SPG

December 30, 2009

Well, I’m probably not the only car nut to do it, but I thought I’d post a nice Saab in honor of the recent passing of one of my favorite car brands. Regular readers might know I grew up in Saabs, so it’s sad to see them go, although I’m not sure I would have had as much use for one of those GM-platform non-hatchback cars they thought would be the key to success. Ha! That said, some online reading is making me think they’re still clinging on to dear life – after all, the new 9-5 was all set to go, so with that and the last-minute folks showing up to make an offer, maybe there is hope.

With that off my chest (bitter at GM? nooo), let’s look at this nice 900 SPG here in Pasadena, CA for $2000. I fear the listing’s already disappeared since it took so long for me to finalize this post, so you may have to just rely on my words and the ad text below:
