Mixed Feelings – 1995 Range Rover County LWB

Range Rovers bring up mixed feelings. On the one hand, they’re an iconic design and an extremely capable, well-designed vehicle, but on the other hand, they’re responsible (together with the Ford Explorer) for the concept of the modern SUV. Looking past the social baggage that carries, they are more practical and capable in utilitarian situations, like driving on trails, towing trailers loaded with rusty old sports cars, and driving over curbs and speed bumps at the mall snowdrifts. Cheap Thing, You Make Everything Groovy – 1974 VW Thing

Given the relative lack of Mini Mokes and Citroen Meharis in the North American market, you’d think the VW Type 181 Thing would have a lock on the audience who thinks doors, windows, a roof, carpet, and more are the conceit of capitalist pigs, and who aren’t crazy about the handling compromises you get with a Jeep, Bronco, or Scout. And you’d be right, which is why pricing in the low five figures is normal for these cars. At least one reactionary sees clearly, though, that this car should be priced so any comrade can afford it, so if you’re one of those, check out this 1974 VW Thing for sale for $4200 in San Jose, CA.

Chevy Tuesday – 1969 Chevrolet Suburban

In the search for oddballs, you sometimes have to look in the most obvious places. Supposing you wanted a three-door wagon. No, not a 2-door wagon, there are plenty of those, and definitely not a 4-door wagon (by the way, this whole thing of counting the hatch as a “door” is just ridiculous – it’s the hatch, not a door). The only production 3-door wagon (yes, this is your invitation to find others) is the Chevrolet Suburban, specifically the 7th generation truck (or the second of the C/K generations). People make a big deal of the AMC Pacer or the Renault 16 being asymmetric (doors and wheelbase, respectively), but this truck is just as deserving of recognition, as you could see it in two pictures and think it’s a different truck. Check out this 1969 Chevrolet Suburban, for sale for $3700 in Lake County, CA.
