You Cannot Lose – 1988 Alfa Romeo Spider Graduate

June 13, 2016

With a recent flurry of articles on this fine site espousing the virtues of Alfa Romeo Spiders, it’s worth showing what happens when the dream doesn’t turn out so well for the owner. Sure, these are fairly solid cars if you assume an attentive owner who will keep on top of preventive maintenance and track & address suspicious noises as needed, but for many, these cars are their first toe in the water of Italian sports cars. And perhaps, as in the case of our feature car, it might also be their last. Check out this 1988 Alfa Romeo Spider Graduate for sale for $750 in Oakland, CA.

One of 1576 – 1988 Toyota MR2 Supercharged

May 26, 2016

Toyota’s MR2 scored on a lot of characteristics – a sharp, light platform; wedgy 1980s styling, even if it is awfully similar to other cars of the same period; a truly enjoyable powertrain; and legendary reliability and durability. Of course, like many 1980s Japanese cars, it had a strong propensity to rust and a rather plasticky interior. And that’s the basic MR2, to which you can add more 1980s features like t-tops and a wedgy spoiler, or a pop-out moonroof. But if you’re looking for more power, the factory offered a supercharged version that was good for an additional 33hp and dropped the 0-60mph time by about 1.5 seconds. Unfortunately for the budget-oriented car enthusiast, they’re not too readily available, but for today let’s take a look at this 1988 Toyota MR2 Supercharged for sale for $3500 in Medford, OR.

Rusty, Not Trusty – 1964 Innocenti S Spider

May 16, 2016

The Innocenti Spider is a great example of something the Italians did really well – put a fancy frock on a set of plain mechanicals. In this case, you get the greasy parts from a Mark 2 Sprite/Midget – a 1098cc A-series inline four cylinder and four speed transmission. In the 1950s and 1960s, Innocenti was best known for its Lambretta scooters and a bunch of rebadged BMC products, but this car can drop the names of some very influential people and companies in the Italian car business – it was designed by Tom Tjaarda for Ghia and built by OSI. The original Spider did not include the S in its model designation, featuring the 948cc engine of the bug/frogeye Sprite, while the S got the larger engine and front disc brakes. The car sold well in Italy, but couldn’t compete well in foreign markets due to price, and as demand waned, Innocenti transformed the car into a hardtop. But for today, we’ll have to be happy with a folding roof, or perhaps no roof at all – check out this 1964 Innocenti S Spider for sale for $2500 in Annandale, VA.
