Perhaps it is their lingering ubiquity that makes Beetles less interesting to some classic car enthusiasts, but there’s really something to be said for all their different permutations, easy-peasy parts availability, and manifold options for modification. And, of course, you get to repair a car using a book for the Compleat Idiot before the “for Idiots” series existed, and what’s more, it’s written by John Muir. Okay, not that John Muir, but hey… anyhow, while a standard Bug does not sound too exciting, going through the process of selecting modifications and making your own to surprise the odd Alfa or BMW sounds like a lot of fun. On the theme of modifications, isn’t it interesting how owners of other modified people’s cars, namely Fiat 500/600s and Minis, are part of a broader car culture while the air-cooled VW nuts split off into their own subculture? Anyway, enough rambling – take a look at this 1967 Volkswagen Beetle for sale in Canby, OR (near Portland), for $3200.

October 28, 2013Cheap Cossie – 1986 Mercedes 190E 2.3-16
October 22, 2013Cosworth-powered cars are fairly rare on North American soil. Compared to what was available in Europe, we only received the Chevrolet Cosworth Vega, which was a great concept that fell down in the execution, and the Mercedes 190E 2.3-16, which was a great car that has lived in the shadow of the contemporary BMW M3. Mercedes had originally asked Cosworth to develop an engine for a rally version of their new 190E, but when Audi came out with the all-conquering Quattro, Mercedes side-stepped and took its car to touring races. This required homologation sales, so the road-going 190E 2.3-16 was developed for sale. Adding a twin cam 16-valve head, lightened pistons and upgraded rings yielded 49hp over the regular 2.3’s 136hp, though the engine was detuned to 167hp for the North American market. You can find your own Anglo-Teutonic screamer in this 1986 Mercedes 190E 2.3-16, available for $3500 in Berkeley, CA.
Stop Falking Around – 1960 Peugeot 403
October 21, 2013It’s time for a bit of a rant – does it drive you nuts how *every* time there’s an article about a vintage Peugeot online, some wise guy writes a reply referencing Columbo? It doesn’t matter if it’s a 504, 404 (wagon, cabriolet, coupe or sedan), 403, or 203, someone has to mention it (ugh, and now it’s happened here too – the irony is not lost!). Referencing a TV series that had its last heyday roughly 20 years ago is about as creative as bringing up the old Fix-It-Again-Tony or “be the first at the scene of the accident” lines for a Fiat or VW bus. Okay, rant over, let’s focus on an actual car. You can find this 1960 Peugeot 403 sedan for $2000 in Mill Valley, CA, just outside San Francisco.
