Long Lost Cousins – 1981 VW Scirocco and 1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT

July 30, 2014

One of the major shortcomings of most car shows, aside from the fact that the owners aren’t driving their cars, is that they’re mostly arranged by marque or by year. What if show organizers arranged cars by more esoteric themes, such as designers, design trends, or social themes? You could tell much more interesting stories that way – juxtaposing Engle-designed Lincolns and Imperials, for example, or a progression spartan post-war European cars through the 1980s. Or you could set various cars from the wedge styling trend together so you could look at a VW Scirocco, Isuzu Impulse/Piazza, Lotus Esprit, Lamborghini Countach, and Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT all in the same row. Well, some of those are out of our budget, but perhaps these two cars can get you started on your own wedge collection. Check out this 1981 VW Scirocco 16v for sale for $3000 in West Hollywood, CA.

Eighties Vee Dub Pair – 1987 VW Scirocco 16v and 1984 VW Rabbit GTI

June 17, 2014

While the second generation Scirocco, with its giant impact bumpers and somewhat blander styling, doesn’t warm the cockles of our icy cold hearts like the first generation car does, it’s still quite a compelling drivetrain package in a very 1980s body style. That 16-valve engine was on every young gearhead’s list back when they were new, perhaps more in the GTI than the Scirocco, but no matter – 26 years (wait, what?) of perspective makes you see things somewhat differently. If you’re not swayed, check out this 1987 VW Scirocco 16v for sale for $3500 in Washington County, west of Portland, OR.

Ghibli’s Cousin – 1981 VW Scirocco S

March 18, 2014

Car Trivia Quiz: What do the Maserati Ghibli and VW Scirocco have in common (Hint: it doesn’t matter if it’s a first- or current-generation car)? The Scirocco was a great example of sporty-car-on-budget-platform, using the Mark 1 Golf/Rabbit for its mechanical bits. Interestingly, the Scirocco was launched before the high-volume Golf to do final debugging on the platform. Featuring a 5-speed transmission and a 1.6-liter engine putting out 70hp, the car was no tire burner, but the performance lay more in its light weight and handling. You can find 1981 VW
Scirocco S
for sale with bidding at $3550, reserve not met, and 5 days left to go, in Hayward, CA.
