Horsing Around – 1978 Renault LeCar Black Beauty

December 14, 2009

Update, 12/14/09: Thanks to flaky bidders, this car is back on eBay. Guess I shouldn’t have been so hasty on the short-eating.

Well, who knew… bringing us down to another level of obscurity is this Black Beauty edition Renault LeCar. I don’t believe this car was actually equine-inspired in any way, but it’s still a neat 70s-style options package based on the R5 GTL. Options, most of which we take for granted nowadays, included a sport steering wheel, alloy wheels, special red striping (ooooh!), AM/FM stereo with delux rear antenna, a locking gas cap, folding canvas roof, and a rear wiper. But really, the most entertaining thing about the brochure (scroll down on the linked page to see it) is the fact that it refers to Le Package. Well, at least it’s funny if you have the mind of a 13-year-old French boy. On a more personal note, the mother of a childhood friend of mine had one of these with the ragtop, and I was pretty impressed at the time with how spacious and smooth-riding it felt.

Anyway, on to the example at hand. Compared to most Renault 5s you see for sale, this one’s in pretty fantastic shape. The black paint and striping are shiny and presentable, and the interior looks pretty tidy as well. It’s also comforting that the seller has thoroughly photographed the car inside and out, so you can see both its flaws and its strengths. On another amusing note, the gold plaque on the dash confers the status of A COLLECTOR ITEM on the car, to quote the seller. Too bad there aren’t that many Renault Le Car collectors out there… that said, this example, in Corona, CA seems to have attracted quite a bit of attention, with 44 (!) bids currently bringing it up to $2750. Don’t get me wrong, I like these cars, but if it significantly passes $3000, I’ll eat my shorts.

Round 2: 1982 Renault LeCar

December 11, 2009

Well, after eating my shorts on the last auction for one of these (which ended at $3500!!), or at least having a nibble, I’m back in the game with another car. While the 2-doors have their own charms, I do think if you’re going to get a “practical” car, you might as well get it with 4 doors so you can take your long-suffering friends and family along for the ride. Beyond that, since I’ve just said about all I can say on these cars, I’ll skip straight to the juice on this specific car.

This example, while originally sold in Kentucky, must have made it to San Diego fairly soon in its life since it shows the expected signs of being there – little rust and paint oxidation. According to the original Monroney sticker, this is a deluxe model, with some stick-on rally stripes and extra chrome trim. The lighter color does seem more flattering of this car, which is available on eBay with 5 bids currently at $1526. I’m not going to offer to eat my shorts if this goes above $3,000 again, since apparently there is some untapped market for LeCars (plus the shorts really weren’t that tasty). The seller lists the car as having 52,416 miles, while the AutoCheck report says the car was last reported to have 152,599 miles in 1998. While probably not a big deal, it’s something to consider while looking the car over.

1978 Renault R17 Gordini

October 13, 2009

Update, 10/13/09: Here it is again. Seller (flipper?) is trying to double his money to $3500, which has to be all the money for one of these. He offers more detail, including that it’s got 38,000 miles, a sliding sunroof, and fuel injection. It was apparently dry-stored in a heated garage, and comes with all records.

Update, 10/5/09: Here’s a 1972 R17 for only $750 in Minneapolis, and in pretty decent shape too. Check out the sweet sport striping just above the rockers.

1972 Renault 17

Here’s a car you don’t see every day, that might give my Lancia a run for its money in terms of rarity on a budget. The fact that Renault made (essentially) two versions of the same car, the 15 and the 17, under the same brand, is something you’ll probably only see a government-owned car company doing! Most in America have disappeared, and to be honest I can’t ever recall seeing one of these in person. Needless to say, that’s where some of the fascination lies for me – I suppose if I had one of these I could cover both sides of the annual French-Italian show in southern California.

This particular car is a 17 Gordini, listed on craigslist in St. Genevieve county, MO for $1800. It’s the top of the range with the 107hp (Euro power – I’m guessing less with smog controls) fuel-injected R1313 engine originally seen in the 16 TS, plus a 5-speed transmission. While this car is the last to carry the Gordini name, it’s not clear that he actually had anything to do with modifying the car. Most of the underneath of the car is shared with the more humble Renault 12.
