Westmoreland or Bust! – 1980 VW Rabbit Diesel

June 25, 2014

While the Volkswagen cars built at the Westmoreland, PA are an interesting sidebar in VW’s production history (together with the South African CitiGolf and the Mexican Caribe), but their compromised interior design and quality, together with softened suspension, mean they’re not viewed all that fondly by enthusiasts. That said, survivors are few and far between at this point, and it’s interesting to look back and see what a former Chevrolet executive thought was the right strategy for selling more Rabbits in North America. Check out this 1980 VW Rabbit Diesel for sale for $2500 in Palo Alto, CA.

Eighties Vee Dub Pair – 1987 VW Scirocco 16v and 1984 VW Rabbit GTI

June 17, 2014

While the second generation Scirocco, with its giant impact bumpers and somewhat blander styling, doesn’t warm the cockles of our icy cold hearts like the first generation car does, it’s still quite a compelling drivetrain package in a very 1980s body style. That 16-valve engine was on every young gearhead’s list back when they were new, perhaps more in the GTI than the Scirocco, but no matter – 26 years (wait, what?) of perspective makes you see things somewhat differently. If you’re not swayed, check out this 1987 VW Scirocco 16v for sale for $3500 in Washington County, west of Portland, OR.

GTI With a Bed – 1980 VW Rabbit Pickup

May 23, 2014

The 1970s gas crisis brought us a whole bunch of neat little pickups, and even the Germans wanted in on the game. While their truck was not a raging success in North America (apparently nobody likes a front-wheel-drive truck), they took off well in other parts of the world and were sold in South Africa until 2007. The 1970s and 1980s desmogging era also brought us some pretty ridiculous sticker and spoiler packages. One of those was the VW Sportruck, which featured a front spoiler, name stripes down the side of the body, additional gauges including a “chronometer” (isn’t that how the Europeans measure distance? six chronometers to the next petrol station?), and some other minor upgrades, but the same engine as every other Rabbit Pickup (0-50 in 9.7 seconds!!). Fortunately, today’s feature vehicle has all the sport on the inside, and is fairly subdued on the outside – check out this 1980 VW Rabbit Pickup, for sale for $4000 in Portland, OR.
