Plain White Wrapper – 1967 Ford F250 Camper Special

March 1, 2016

With all the cars you’ve been finding on RustyButTrusty, you’ve surely been thinking, “I’d love to drag some of these oxidized heaps restoration opportunities home with me, but how? Old cars with seized brakes are so heavy, and Earl’s Towing won’t drag home something without plates on it.” Well fortunately, for the cost of merely a few tows, you can have your own rig, starting with the kind of expression of American freedom of choice we can only be brave enough to exercise in these times of $30/barrel oil – a pickup with a big block V8 engine. However, plenty of these in the affordable end of the market, as with any popular car of a certain age, have been subjected to abuse, corrosion, and modifications of questionable taste. So it’s a pleasure to find a clean, cosmetically stock version of the heavier-duty F250, like this 1967 Ford F250 Camper Special for sale for $1850 in Washougal, WA.

Anti-VW – 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier and 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside

December 18, 2015

Reflecting on the extreme popularity of VW Type 2 products, it’s curious the competing Corvair vans never received the same recognition. Sure, they were successful enough in sales, but they never achieved the same level of cultural cachet the VWs had. Part of this is no doubt due to the mainstream Chevrolet badge, but everything else about the vehicles was decidedly counter-culture. In fact, it was so counter-cultural that it was not terribly profitable for GM, but the flat 6, which led to its recognition in-period as a poor man’s Porsche, meant you can be spared the wrath of modern-day semi-truck drivers, and the styling has some quintessentially 1960s GM design cues. So sure, you can compensate for your other shortcomings by driving a vehicle with too many windows, or you can do the same in a more effective way – with horsepower! Check out this 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier for sale for $4500 in Springfield, OR.

Arbitrage Opportunity – 1981 Toyota Pickup

December 17, 2015

Anybody who’s spent time in San Francisco will have noticed the night-time recyclers, driving around in trucks overloaded with cardboard, bottles, and cans, making a racket sifting through people’s recycle bins for the choice pieces. Their vehicle of choice is often a 25-30 year-old Toyota pickup. Or you might have noticed that building contractors and maintenance workers prefer smaller vehicles to carry their tools and supplies. Their vehicle of choice is often a 25-30 year-old Toyota pickup or van. That puts a higher than normal pressure on the market for these vehicles, which brings us to an interesting opportunity – say you lived in another nearby city but had frequent business in San Francisco – could you make a small amount of money buying a nearby truck, driving it down, and flipping it to a small-truck-loving San Franciscan? Now all we need is a truck – check out this 1981 Toyota Pickup for sale for $1700 in Vancouver, WA.
