Germany’s Camaro – 1974 Opel Manta

July 3, 2015

Continuing the theme of cars that are mainstream in their home country, but oddballs in North America, is the Opel Manta. Just like the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, it’s a pretty good popular sports car that has suffered from its associations with mullets, wrap-around sunglasses, bleached denim, big hair, and cheap beer. But if you look past all the cultural baggage, they’re really pretty good sports cars with strong aftermarket support. So in the case of the Manta, you can rely on some local parts sources for the basics, and if you want performance parts, those are readily available from Germany (sorry Greece, but yay weak Euro!). Check out this 1974 Opel Manta for sale for $1500 in Vancouver, WA.

Anti-2002 – 1972 Opel Manta

February 7, 2014

So yeah, BMW 2002s are taking off in value. And sure, they’re nice cars with an iconic design, but the general enthusiasm around them would suggest they’re the only cars in their category, when in fact, they aren’t. And what’s more is, if you look around a little, you can find some affordable alternatives from manufacturers in Italy, England, and Japan. So if you’re feeling a little left out on the current collector-car price explosion, don’t – there are plenty of options still out there, and some arguably more attractive than the 2002. Here’s one of those alternatives – this 1972 Opel Manta, for sale for $1200 in Pueblo, CO.

Not Oh-Pal – 1974 Opel Ascona and 1971 Opel Manta

December 3, 2013

Opels were a not uncommon car back when they were just used cars, but now the youngest ones sold in the US are at least 38 years old, and in their primary role as affordable runabouts, most have disappeared from the roads. However, as most European cars do, they attracted an enthusiast contingent, including one man who has hoarded accumulated a significant collection in warehouses and outdoor lots. Technically, he can’t be called a hoarder since he’s “selling”, although quite a few of his cars are priced to look like they’re waiting for when the rising Porsche tide floats his Opel boats. Of course, in many cases, “where are you going to find another?” is the only response to that statement. You can find his 1974 Opel Ascona A 2-door for sale in Riverside, CA for $1500.
