Fiat Fun – Pre-Smog Fiats

After running through the asinine gauntlet that is California smog law yesterday (my Alfetta, which does about 2K miles per year while I use transit to get to work), I thought I’d shift my focus to some pre-smog cars… specifically, the Italian ones. With that off my chest, here are a couple that look fun while also saving you the pain and cost of running an occasional driver through smog every two years.

First off is this 1970 Fiat Spider in Spokane, WA for $1350. Notice the cleaner-looking early style with small chrome bumpers, hubcaps, and no hood bulges. Fiat Spiders actually have a great level of significance to me since my parents had a light-orange ’69 on their honeymoon, and my first ride in a convertible was in an early 80s model on a beach excursion with my teacher from the Franco-American school in Palo Alto. I also considered one as an alternative to my Alfa Spider when I had my accident, but the cars that were affordable were also less attractive. Lastly, knowing what the Lampredi twincam can do under the hood of my smog-burdened Beta, I’d love to see what this 1970 car could do with twin carbs and some light modifications… I’m sure it would be able to hold its own with any contemporary Alfa.

Holy Pistons! 1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT turbo

Update, 7/8/09: This car is now available on eBay, with better pictures showing its condition. Still looks like a solid project for that price, and it’s possible this is a period Jafco turbo setup.

As you might know if you’ve looked around elsewhere here, I’m the proud owner of a faded and somewhat rusty, but solid and reliable, 1979 Alfetta GT (sprint veloce). The shape shows some typical design characteristics of its period, and the car is very close in some ways to the contemporary VW Scirocco and Lotus Esprit (start with the trapezoidal windshield), which were all done by Giugiaro. Anyway, I thought I’d post this car to assuage my guilt about not finishing off the Alfetta’s clutch slave cylinder – it’s all hooked up, just needs bleeding and bolting into place to be done.

This sweet-looking car (okay, the flesh-toned paint job is a little weird) has the desirable 5-star Daytona-style wheels, a lip spoiler on the hatch, rollbar, and a large turbo. It is listed for $2500 in Denver, CO. The seller has had the car garaged for years, and has now realized he will never get this non-running car on the road. As you can see in the side shot below, the car has also been lowered:

Boise Betas – HPE, Coupe, and Zagatos

Since I’m feeling guilty (or something) for finally giving in on my Beta sedan and taking it up to a professional in Berkeley, I figured I’d do a post on Betas. Call it an act of contrition, if you like. Speaking from my experiences working on these cars, I would move on any of these cars with a certain level of trepidation, but I have to say they’re still very attractive in terms of the performance and technology you get in these late-70s cars. Maybe it’s just setting the correct expectations – with these cars at such low prices, expect to do a certain amount of mechanical work before having a reliable, smooth-running driver.

Who knew there were so many Betas in Boise? With four on the market at the same time, Boise must be a veritable hotbed of Lancia enthusiasts. With the varied assortment, you have to think that somewhere in the Boise area, there’s a Berlina hiding in someone’s garage. This first pair is pretty interesting – an HPE and a Coupe, both from 1979. Unfortunately, the HPE has an automatic transmission and is missing a carb, but from my perspective that’s a good reason to source a fuel-injected 2000 engine with a 5-speed and drop that in, instead of bothering with the strangling emissions equipment. The good news is, the coupe is a runner, so you can keep the flame alive with that while finding and installing that 2000. The HPE is also listed separately at $200, but you can get the whole package here at $750 in Meridian, ID.
