Future Brothers – 1973 Fiat 128 Sport L

December 7, 2013

Who isn’t a sucker for something pretty and Italian? And if it’s an unusual variant of an already-rare model, with some neat modifications, it’s like catnip to us. The Fiat 128 Sport L (also known as an SL, but this is what the badge says), with its innovative sedan underpinnings, was a pretty little coupe that took some of its lines from the Fiat versions of Dinos, not a bad place at all from which to take inspiration. You can also see some of big brother 124 coupe in there. Next to the Sport L, the successor model 128 3P looks more like Fiat’s quick-and-dirty attempt to put together a hatch to compete with the A1 VW Golf. You can find this 1973 Fiat 128 Sport L for sale in Eugene, OR with bidding at $2025, reserve not met, and about 4 days left to go.

Prettiest Small Coupe – 1970 Fiat 850 Coupe

December 4, 2013

When it came out in 1965, the Fiat 850 was recognized as one of the most successful designs of a 4-place compact sports coupe. From its raised headlights through the sloping roof, to the spoiler lip of the engine cover and quad tail lights copying and foreshadowing Ferrari designs (respectively), it had the true look of a sporting Italian car. Sadly, as a budget sports car, very few remain, and fewer still are in regular use. But this is where you, dear reader, come into play. Take the opportunity to get this 1970 Fiat 850 coupe, for sale in Oakland, CA for $3900, back on the road.

RustyButTrusty on the Street – Mercedes, Alfa, and a VW on Street View

November 26, 2013

Today’s theme is that sometimes the cool cars are close by, and sometimes they are far away. But the key is that people are out there using them, and even if they get dirty or chipped, they’re not half as much fun sitting in the garage. The first car is in an office development fairly close to RustyButTrusty world headquarters. R107 Mercedes SLs are not such a rare find, and would not ordinarily show up in this context, but this small-bumper SL is probably a 1972 or 1973 model. Complete with personalized blue California plates, it looks the part of the executive from one of those newfangled chip manufacturers. Can you imagine, some people were born and made it nearly through high school without Mercedes revealing a new SL?
