The Real People’s Car – 1986 Yugo GV

As Fiat had just pulled out of the US market, and Renault and Volkswagen’s fortunes were waning, Malcolm Bricklin saw an opportunity to jump in with an inexpensive car to round out his long-in-the-tooth model line, the Pininfarina Azzura (Fiat 124) and Bertone X1/9, with a compact, affordable car. Originally pitched with a $4500 list price, a 10-year/100K-mile warranty and free maintenance, there was no doubt this car, developed for a closed socialist economy, would be a hit in a competitive capitalist market. Hundreds of changes were made to comply with American requirements and laws, and the cars were even built on a special production line with workers who were paid extra for their effort (wait, wasn’t this car was from a socialist country?). Ultimately, the Yugo GV went on the market at $3990, but now you can have this 1986 Yugo GV, in Nashua, NH, for a mere fraction of its original purchase price at either the $2695 Buy-It-Now price or the starting bid of $995 with reserve unmet and about 1 day left.

Tasteful Eco-Rocket – 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit Turbo Diesel

As part of the childhood RustyButTrusty fleet, the VW Rabbit has a special place and consequently is featured on a frequent basis. Unfortunately, surviving Rabbits (now between 29 and 38 years old!) are either slammed and bagged with wide 13-inch wheels wearing thin rubber, or they’re rough projects needing plenty of attention. Occasionally you do get a nice original example, or a tastefully modified car. And the latter direction is apparent in our feature car, this 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit Turbo Diesel available for $3800 in Pinson, AL. That’s only $400 more than yesterday’s 1983 Mercedes! Wait, what?

Proto-WRX – 1988 Mazda 323 GTX

Often forgotten, the Mazda 323 GTX was the first all wheel drive turbo hatch on US shores. Sure, the Audi Quattro had been here for a few years, but this was based on an economy car that was more attainable for your average person. Equipped with bolstered sports seats, a 132hp turbocharged engine, all wheel drive with a driver-lockable differential, and redesigned platform with reinforced sills, the car was a significant step up from the regular model, and was priced accordingly. This led to weak sales at about half the expected rate, but the car is still prized among enthusiasts who were pining for a rally car for the street. You can find this 1988 Mazda 323 GTX in San Francisco, CA for $2800.
