Last of the MBicans – 1992 Mercedes 300 SE

January 27, 2015

There’s a lot of moaning, and probably has been since the curved dash Olds was phased out, that the real insert-marque-here no longer exists. And so it is with Mercedes – since about the W211 E-class Mercedes, where the company made a distinct shift in thinking, adding more style to their cars and adjusting the quality to the expectation of their clients, not engineers and automotive journalists. They don’t make insert-thing-here like they used to, and while the things they used to make are great in their own way, we probably have fewer people losing control of their cars, getting electrocuted by home appliances, or hurting their kid with a poorly designed toy. For a car that won’t electrocute you even though it is made like it used to be, check out this 1992 Mercedes 300SE for sale for $3500 in Fremont, CA.

In a Eurovan, Down by the River – 1993 VW Eurovan

January 7, 2015

There’s not much out there if you’re a row-your-own kind of driver who needs to have a van to accommodate family, furniture, or other bulky items. If you narrow it even further to a vehicle you can sleep and eat in fairly comfortably, there’s not much left, particularly in the modern car segment. So it’s nice to find a VW Eurovan with manual transmission. These early Eurovans didn’t have the VR6 of the late 90s to early 00s vans; instead, they featured a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder, ostensibly to make up for the power deficit of Vanagons and Type 3 buses. Unfortunately, they were not outrageously successful, and the manuals are pretty thin on the ground. Of course, you can trust San Francisco to have any oddball for sale, so check out this 1993 VW Eurovan for sale for $3500 in San Francisco, CA.

Ur-Buggy – 1967 VW Empi Sportster

January 6, 2015

It’s not often you can feature a segment-creating car at the lower end of the market. But it’s possible to get lucky and find a gem if you’re willing to compromise on cosmetics, and frankly, the beauty of this car does not lie in things like shiny paint and perfect shutlines. Especially since it has no opening panels. The Empi Sportster pre-dated the famous Meyers Manx, allowing owners of clapped out Beetles to refresh their ride with some new body work, or to get the sporting allure of a dune buggy for not much money. Available in 2-seat and 4-seat configurations, today’s car is one of the shorter 2-seaters. Check out this 1967 VW Empi Sportster for sale for $3995 in Danville, CA.
