Low EXPectations – 1988 Ford EXP

April 12, 2016

There are plenty of examples of interesting sports coupes based on ho-hum platforms – look at the Ford Capri, VW Scirocco, and Honda CRX to get an idea of great cars that shared a lot with their siblings. All were widely appreciated in their time, and are still today appreciated as young-timer collector cars. Unfortunately, some cars on ho-hum platforms can’t escape their roots – consider the mildly funky-looking but bland-driving Honda Prelude, for example. But Honda’s not the only one who managed to make that kind of transformation – Ford is also guilty. For a good example of how that happened, let’s take a look at this 1988 Ford EXP for sale for $2888 in Portland, OR.

Plain White Wrapper – 1967 Ford F250 Camper Special

March 1, 2016

With all the cars you’ve been finding on RustyButTrusty, you’ve surely been thinking, “I’d love to drag some of these oxidized heaps restoration opportunities home with me, but how? Old cars with seized brakes are so heavy, and Earl’s Towing won’t drag home something without plates on it.” Well fortunately, for the cost of merely a few tows, you can have your own rig, starting with the kind of expression of American freedom of choice we can only be brave enough to exercise in these times of $30/barrel oil – a pickup with a big block V8 engine. However, plenty of these in the affordable end of the market, as with any popular car of a certain age, have been subjected to abuse, corrosion, and modifications of questionable taste. So it’s a pleasure to find a clean, cosmetically stock version of the heavier-duty F250, like this 1967 Ford F250 Camper Special for sale for $1850 in Washougal, WA.

Body Color Bumpers – 1977 Ford Capri MkII

February 12, 2016

While the early Capri coupes are arguably prettier, with their smaller chrome bumpers, it seems like Ford made a genuine effort to disguise the required modifications to its 1974-77 Capris. So the later cars have body colored bumpers, a design feature that wasn’t adapted by many other cars until well into the 1980s. Combined with a greater prevalence of the more powerful 2.8-liter Cologne V6 – okay, maybe not after the EPA was finished with it – these cars are not all bad, unless you’re in a state that does not have a rolling emissions exemption. Early or late, though, all Capris are pretty rare, and finding a solid one for a nice price is fairly unusual. So it’s a pleasure to find this 1977 Ford Capri for sale for $2500 $1900 in Vancouver, WA.
