Must Be Coupe Week – 1988 Mercedes 300CE

April 14, 2016

If you like the style of Mercedes’ sedan-derived coupes, but don’t want to put up with some of the downsides of the earlier W123 diesels, or the higher price for those in good condition, you can try searching for a European market W123 280CE or 230CE. But if you’d like to own a Mercedes coupe in your lifetime, perhaps it’s worth another look at the W124 300CE. Equipped with Mercedes’ 177hp inline six, throttle response should be significantly better than its predecessors, though you’ll pay for it in fuel costs (especially now diesel is actually cheaper than gasoline). Moreover, while the W123 coupes are certainly attractive, the shape of the W124 seems to have had a more successful coupe conversion. Check out this 1988 Mercedes 300CE for sale for $3650 in Chehalis, WA.

Better Days – 1970 Ford LTD XL

April 13, 2016

Having just looked at an example of a now-rare Ford coupe, let’s take a look at another less-common coupe from the same manufacturer. Eighteen years makes enough of a difference that if you looked up “complete opposite of the Ford EXP” in the dictionary, you’d probably find a picture of a Ford LTD XL. Funny enough, the LTD XL coupe was never that much of a success either, in spite of its interesting styling, which showed that Ferrari is not the only F-brand that could make cars with a flying-buttress roof. Let’s take a closer look at this 1970 Ford LTD XL for sale for $3500 in Battle Ground, WA.

Low EXPectations – 1988 Ford EXP

April 12, 2016

There are plenty of examples of interesting sports coupes based on ho-hum platforms – look at the Ford Capri, VW Scirocco, and Honda CRX to get an idea of great cars that shared a lot with their siblings. All were widely appreciated in their time, and are still today appreciated as young-timer collector cars. Unfortunately, some cars on ho-hum platforms can’t escape their roots – consider the mildly funky-looking but bland-driving Honda Prelude, for example. But Honda’s not the only one who managed to make that kind of transformation – Ford is also guilty. For a good example of how that happened, let’s take a look at this 1988 Ford EXP for sale for $2888 in Portland, OR.
