Overall, the bias here is towards cars. But every so often, a truck comes up with a certain charm that’s enough to make it worth featuring. The Dodge D100 is one of those trucks – it’s a little funky, and definitely Dodge, and different for not being every other GM or Ford pickup out there. With a very boxy shape combined with goofy oversize headlight trim and styled sides, it looks a little like a gawky teenager, which is what pickups of the 1950s and 1960s were, in a sense – they were in transition from being a work vehicle to being a passenger vehicle. Untouched Survivor – 1966 Dodge D100
July 12, 2014Final Year – 1992 BMW 325iC
July 11, 2014Let’s face it – while the E30 is recognized by some as the last real BMW, or (take your pick) cult classic, future classic, or “modern” 2002, it’s still a fairly common used car, at least in the drier states. Finding one requires sifting through piles of beaters, and once you get through that you might also want to eliminate the automatic transmission cars from consideration, as well as the iX models with the needlessly complex all-wheel-drive, and the early 318i with its gutless four-cylinder. That really doesn’t leave very many cars, so it’s nice to find a clean, affordable car with a manual transmission and a top that goes down. Kind of. You can find this 1992 BMW 325iC for sale for $3595 in Berkeley, CA.
Cheap Thing, You Make Everything Groovy – 1974 VW Thing
July 11, 2014Given the relative lack of Mini Mokes and Citroen Meharis in the North American market, you’d think the VW Type 181 Thing would have a lock on the audience who thinks doors, windows, a roof, carpet, and more are the conceit of capitalist pigs, and who aren’t crazy about the handling compromises you get with a Jeep, Bronco, or Scout. And you’d be right, which is why pricing in the low five figures is normal for these cars. At least one reactionary sees clearly, though, that this car should be priced so any comrade can afford it, so if you’re one of those, check out this 1974 VW Thing for sale for $4200 in San Jose, CA.
