Not Creepy At All – 1977 Dodge Tradesman and 1980 Chevrolet Malibu

April 6, 2016

Perusing the local online listings can sometimes turn up some unintended gems. Most enthusiasts of small, cheap foreign sportscars don’t go hunting for conversion vans, but the wilds of the internet allow exposure to vehicles you might not ordinarily find in the local car club listings. And so it is that we come across a couple of not-interesting-yet-interesting items – a 1970s kustom van and a converted Malaise-era Chevrolet Malibu wagon. Neither is a particularly inspiring drive in its original state, and perhaps remains so in its current state, but both manage to pique at least momentary interest from enthusiasts. To start, let’s take a look at this 1977 Dodge Tradesman for sale for $1200 in Sumner, WA.

Grownup GLHS – 1989 Dodge Lancer Shelby

Imagine for a moment that you live in a rural Midwestern state/province. You like the idea of a Saab turbo hatch, but you’re not near an indie Saab shop the way you would be had you chosen to live in a coastal city. What to do? Perhaps holding out for one of Dodge’s turbo cars of the 1980s is the way to go – plenty came with hatchback practicality, 2.2-liter turbocharged engines with comparable (if not more) power, manual transmissions, and handling numbers that compared favorably to many European cars (though for some reason, Dodge decided to compare its 4-door mid-size hatchback to sedans from then-stodgy-but-solid Mercedes and not-stodgy BMW). With red paint on grey interiors and a spoiler over the rear window and on the trunk lip, they definitely weren’t subtle, and probably would have squared off better against the Merkur XR4Ti and Scorpio or, uh, the rebadged Opels GM wasn’t giving North America in the 1980s. Anyhow, let’s take a look at this 1989 Dodge Lancer Shelby for sale for $3500 in Boston, MA.

Wagon-Off – 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 Country Sedan vs. 1969 Dodge Polara Wagon

December 12, 2015

You can’t take a serious look at station wagons without looking at the American whales of the postwar era. Much like shopping for a crossover today, you could hardly throw a rock on dealer row without hitting one of these barges. And since they were so prolific back when they were new, it’s still possible to find decent examples for short money now. Fortunately, this week’s search for wagons turned up a decent pair of 1969 cars, arguably a high point for American cars. Check out this 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 Country Sedan for sale for $3500 in Pendleton, OR.
