Ever since people collected and restored Ford Model Ts, and possibly before that with the curved dash Olds, even “mundane” everyman cars were on their way to becoming collectible. When you’re buying one of those, it’s the automotive equivalent of comfort food – you’re not necessarily doing it because it expands your palate, or because it’s the best thing you ever tasted, but the memories it evokes are the most compelling reason. Unlike food, though, you might try out a different classic because it allows you to experience another time, perhaps one during which you weren’t even alive. January 14, 2014Engineering Magic – 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe Club Coupe
January 13, 2014In a 1949 advertisement, Plymouth boasted “Engineering magic greets you right from the start.” And sure enough, it did, with a stunning 2hp boost over the previous year, due to a raised compression ratio. The advertisement also mentions some kind of automatic choke system, which is rather surprising for the immediate postwar years, when a car basically had to have 4 wheels and an engine to be successful. Against the pre-war based Fords and post-war styled Chevrolets that were its competition at its debut in 1946, it looked quite modern, but in the year our feature car was built, it looked dated compared to the new 1949 shoebox Fords, which no longer showed any trace of the separate-fender era. However, with 65 years gone by, these cars are quite compelling as classics – simple mechanics and equipment. American Hustle, Part 2 – 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass
January 10, 2014Continuing our 2-part miniseries where we look at some of the cars from the era represented in American Hustle, here’s a car that would have been seen in the background, or was perhaps driven by one of the secondary characters. In 1976, this car was as mundane as a Camry is today, but with 38 years of hindsight, this wheezing behemoth is a neat relic of the era. Will we be able to say the same about the Camry in 2052? You can find this 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass for sale in Kirkland, WA for $3000. How close is that to the original sale price of this car?
