Second Car – 1958 Nash Metropolitan Topless Coupe

February 5, 2014

In the post-war years, when it was still somewhat unusual for a family to have two cars, independent American manufacturers like Crosley and Nash saw an opportunity to compete where the Big 3 weren’t playing. This resulted in an interesting, if rather odd, selection of cars with big-car cues (or lack of any style at all) applied to small cars. They also lacked big-car power, of course, but the idea was that short runs to town could be accomplished in something better suited to one person. Check out this 1958 Nash Metropolitan for sale for $3400 in Stanwood, WA.

Incognito – 1973 Jeep Commando C104

February 4, 2014

Ever have a hard time deciding between a Jeepster and a Bronco? Ever want a car that looked like it was built under license in a developing country with a hastily-designed nose job and upgrade to a more agricultural powerplant? Well, your search is over, because soon after AMC acquired Jeep in 1970, they mandated a 3″ longer wheelbase and a longer nose to accommodate their 232ci and 258ci I6s, and their 304ci V8. You can find this 1973 Jeep Commando C104 for sale in Arlington, WA for $2500.

Rad! – 1985 Merkur XR4Ti

January 25, 2014

Sellers who pack their listings with unrelated keywords are mostly an annoyance, but every so often the perp does give it a little thought, and you unintentionally find an interesting car, thanks to their efforts. Even if you were just fuming because listings for Lexuses are filling up your search results. Regular readers probably are already familiar with the Merkur – based on the European Ford Sierra, with the 2.3-liter Lima four, turbocharged, two spoilers (one is not enough!), and other awesome 1980s styling cliches. Going for the manual transmission got you an additional 30hp to 175, so do not go into an automatic lightly. This first-year 1985 Merkur XR4Ti is for sale for $3100 in Pacific Beach (near San Diego), CA.
