Looking around at British classic car magazines, you can easily find some of the less popular classics in fantastic original condition with low miles for seemingly low prices (sometimes even 3 figures, although once you translate from pounds it’s not as impressive). And perhaps there’s a reason old Nige only drove his Allegro five times a year, but nonetheless, there’s that feeling of getting a nicer car than should be possible for the money. The same could be the case for less-popular American classics, although the chances of finding something that might take a corner or two well are slimmer. February 17, 2014Ford Monday – 1969 Ford Galaxie LTD XL Convertible
February 17, 20141969 marked the first model year for the final generation of Ford Galaxie for North America. Bigger is better was still the watchword for Ford, and the new Galaxie was longer and had a larger top-spec engine with more power. Convertibles were still part of the lineup, along with sedans, 2- and 4-door hardtops, and wagons, and for 1969 they had concealed headlamps, a protruding center grill section, and a body-color bar stretching across the center of the grill. Goes Like Hell – 1986 Dodge Omni GLH
February 12, 2014Based on a European Simca design, with substantial modification for the European market, sales of the Plymouth Horizon/Dodge Omni were credited with saving Chrysler’s bacon back in the 1970s, convincing the government to put together a rescue package. They beat Ford’s Escort to market, and were right on the heels of GM’s (rear-wheel-drive) Chevette/T1000. In spite of Chrysler having borrowed quite heavily from the Mark 1 Golf, VW agreed to supply Chrysler with its 1.7-liter engine, and for many years this VW and a Peugeot/Talbot 1.6 were the base engines, depending on year. However, America being America, we needed more power, and so Chrysler started fitting their 2.2, and then (more power! more!) they added a turbo. With 146hp, it blew the segment-leading GTI out of the water, at least in terms of acceleration. You can find this 1986 Dodge Omni GLH for sale for $3500 in Deer Valley, AZ.
