Voiture sans luxe – 1971 Simca 1204

March 24, 2010

“More of the oddball French cars!”, the voice in my head said, and luckily the market provided. When I was a kid, I had a toy Majorette Simca 1100 that came with a boat trailer. Don’t ask me why someone would tow a motorboat with a (at most) 1300cc car, but there it is. And I was inexplicably fascinated by toy cars with trailers… maybe because it mimicked an adult scenario I hoped to live out at some point, although I have so far not towed any kind of trailer, and have no desire to do so.

Speaking of trailers, this car will have to come home on one. Since these are so rare in the US (rarer than Lancia Beta sedans? I’ve never seen even one), beggars can’t be choosers, and I’m featuring this rather rusty, but intact, example. It runs, and with a bit of effort might at least be drivable. With no bids and currently at $199 with no reserve and 3 days left to go in LaPorte, IN, you really can’t go wrong.

1964 Fiat 1100D

September 18, 2009

If you were setting up an Italian garage, circa 1964, I think a Fiat 1100 would look pretty neat parked next to something less practical – like, say, a 1964 Alfa Giulia Sprint GT. While retaining a bit of the charm of older Italian sedans, it’s become a bit more angular, keeping up with more modern designs like the aforementioned Alfa. This particular car is available on craigslist in Parker, CO near Denver for $1800. With only 39,000 miles – admittedly unverified – and in running condition, this car shouldn’t need much to run the next California Melee in comfort, with plenty of trunk space under its boxy rear for tools and parts.

Fiat Fun – Pre-Smog Fiats

July 22, 2009

After running through the asinine gauntlet that is California smog law yesterday (my Alfetta, which does about 2K miles per year while I use transit to get to work), I thought I’d shift my focus to some pre-smog cars… specifically, the Italian ones. With that off my chest, here are a couple that look fun while also saving you the pain and cost of running an occasional driver through smog every two years.

First off is this 1970 Fiat Spider in Spokane, WA for $1350. Notice the cleaner-looking early style with small chrome bumpers, hubcaps, and no hood bulges. Fiat Spiders actually have a great level of significance to me since my parents had a light-orange ’69 on their honeymoon, and my first ride in a convertible was in an early 80s model on a beach excursion with my teacher from the Franco-American school in Palo Alto. I also considered one as an alternative to my Alfa Spider when I had my accident, but the cars that were affordable were also less attractive. Lastly, knowing what the Lampredi twincam can do under the hood of my smog-burdened Beta, I’d love to see what this 1970 car could do with twin carbs and some light modifications… I’m sure it would be able to hold its own with any contemporary Alfa.
