Topless Oddball Fox – 1989 Lincoln Mark VII Convertible

February 24, 2016

As most of you probably know, the early 1980s was a tough time for convertibles. Of course, that presented an opportunity for small shops to pop up and do convertible conversions of varying quality, and as the 1980s progressed, mainstream manufacturers were getting back in the game – see the Miata or Chrysler’s K-car based convertibles. However, there were still opportunities for the coachbuilders – among them, Straman most famously did conversions on everything from Honda’s CRX to various European exotics. In between those two extremes, imagine the person who wants something more grown-up than his ’85 Mustang convertible – perhaps its platform-mate, the Lincoln Mark VII, if only someone would chop the top off properly. Thankfully, Ford had an arrangement with Custom Coachbuilders Unlimited, so on that note, have a look at this 1989 Lincoln Mark VII convertible for sale for $2495 somewhere in southern New Hampshire.

Grownup GLHS – 1989 Dodge Lancer Shelby

February 23, 2016

Imagine for a moment that you live in a rural Midwestern state/province. You like the idea of a Saab turbo hatch, but you’re not near an indie Saab shop the way you would be had you chosen to live in a coastal city. What to do? Perhaps holding out for one of Dodge’s turbo cars of the 1980s is the way to go – plenty came with hatchback practicality, 2.2-liter turbocharged engines with comparable (if not more) power, manual transmissions, and handling numbers that compared favorably to many European cars (though for some reason, Dodge decided to compare its 4-door mid-size hatchback to sedans from then-stodgy-but-solid Mercedes and not-stodgy BMW). With red paint on grey interiors and a spoiler over the rear window and on the trunk lip, they definitely weren’t subtle, and probably would have squared off better against the Merkur XR4Ti and Scorpio or, uh, the rebadged Opels GM wasn’t giving North America in the 1980s. Anyhow, let’s take a look at this 1989 Dodge Lancer Shelby for sale for $3500 in Boston, MA.

Supercabby – 1989 VW Cabriolet G60

February 22, 2016

Pigeon-holed as a cheerleader’s car in its first life, the VW Cabriolet has been uncovered by many early-water-cooled VW enthusiasts as the good car it is – a 4-place convertible with decent power (especially with the manual) and good passive safety for the time. Of course, stock power is never enough for some folks, and that’s why there’s another popular pastime among VW fans – dropping in a later VW factory powertrain to add power. So that brings us to this 1989 VW Cabriolet for sale for $3000 in Revere, MA.
