Delivering the Promise – 1975 Plymouth Duster

March 2, 2016

The Plymouth Duster was one of those ambiguously named cars – the name’s reference to “dusting” anyone at a street race should have probably been “Dusted”, particularly when set up with an emissions-control-choked slant six. Competing with cars like the Ford Maverick, it also provided an alternative to imports like Toyota’s Corona and the VW Beetle. Though more modern, it still failed to achieve the sense of quality the imports provided, and is arguably one of the many death throes of “old Detroit”. That said, it is a part of our history, and in the 4 elapsed decades since the cars were built, the aftermarket has risen up to fill in the shortcomings of the original design. A good example of that is this 1975 Plymouth Duster for sale for $3499 in Portland, OR.

Plain White Wrapper – 1967 Ford F250 Camper Special

March 1, 2016

With all the cars you’ve been finding on RustyButTrusty, you’ve surely been thinking, “I’d love to drag some of these oxidized heaps restoration opportunities home with me, but how? Old cars with seized brakes are so heavy, and Earl’s Towing won’t drag home something without plates on it.” Well fortunately, for the cost of merely a few tows, you can have your own rig, starting with the kind of expression of American freedom of choice we can only be brave enough to exercise in these times of $30/barrel oil – a pickup with a big block V8 engine. However, plenty of these in the affordable end of the market, as with any popular car of a certain age, have been subjected to abuse, corrosion, and modifications of questionable taste. So it’s a pleasure to find a clean, cosmetically stock version of the heavier-duty F250, like this 1967 Ford F250 Camper Special for sale for $1850 in Washougal, WA.

The Fire’s Gone Out – 1983 Renault Fuego Turbo

February 29, 2016

Have you ever wanted to come into the turbo zone? There aren’t many 1980s sports coupes left that would take you there – VW’s Scirocco, Toyota’s Celica and Nissan’s 200SX didn’t offer turbo power, and few of those survive. The only car in the Fuego’s class to offer a turbo was the Subaru (Leone) coupe, and not many of those have survived. And even with a turbo, performance went from slow with the stock naturally aspirated four to decent – comparable to many other naturally aspirated cars – with the turbo. That said, it was remarkable for several other things, like fuel injection, a low-for-the-time coefficient of drag, and in the European market, the first remote door locking system and audio controls on the steering wheel. Check out this 1983 Renault Fuego Turbo for sale for $1000 in Beverly, MA.
