A short trip to Hawaii yielded a couple of interesting finds. Evidently, the climate and distance from the mainland does not get in every enthusiast’s way of enjoying older cars. Beyond what’s captured below, some older American cars, a pair of Pinzgauers, a beater Beetle convertible and a mid-1970s Porsche 911S in running but rusty condition were pleasant surprises among all the rental Jeeps. The first find was this unusual pair – a Nash Metropolitan which was promoting a business next to a Subaru Loyale. The Subaru must have been a recent arrival from the mainland since it was in immaculate shape.

Projects and Parts – Fiat 124 Spider, X1/9, 500 and 850 Spider
October 16, 2015It’s time for a survey of some interesting Fiats available for sale. The first is this 1976 Fiat Spider for sale for $1850 in Long Beach, CA. There’s nothing fun like a classic car with a wacky paint job, and this is a great example. Was the painter going for patriotic Italian-American? Beach umbrella style? Curiously, there are auxiliary lights on the rear fenders, and the top frame needs adjustment or repair. It’s said to run and drive well, but not much more is provided in the way of details. Stripes mean nobody will run into you when you’re waiting for a tow.
Car For Sale! – 1979 Volkswagen Dasher
October 10, 2015Joining the VW lineup just before the Golf, and being the first launched of VW’s current lineup of modern, economical front wheel drive cars, the VW Passat must have seemed scary for the company at the time. So far, VW had been very conservative, sticking to its lineup of flat-4 powered, rear-engine rear-wheel-drive, air-cooled cars, but given the complaints from the public about the ancient technology upon which their cars were based, they were forced to do something drastic. Imagine any major car company changing their whole platform strategy today – suppose BMW dropped all their six-cylinder engines, and went to front-wheel-drive, turbocharged four cylinders as their dominant powertrain – it’s really a pretty remarkable move. Of course, VW held on to the old Beetle-based cars for six more years in Europe, US/Canada and Asia, and continued far further in Mexico and down through Brazil, as well as South Africa and doubtless others. Check out VW’s first successful (you wouldn’t call the K70 successful or VW’s, would you?) foray into conventional powertrains here with this 1979 VW Dasher for sale for an unknown price that can’t be more than $1000, right?
