1966 Volvo 122 Wagon

July 25, 2013

One of the cars that’s always been interesting for me (if you live within an hour of Berkeley, you really can’t avoid them!) is the Volvo 122. They’re really quite attractive sedans in the typical European look of their era. To see what I mean, take a look at a contemporary Fiat 1100, VW Type 3 notchback or squareback, or maybe even an Austin 1100. They’re also still easily modified with cams, suspension, and ignition improvements readily available. And I can’t imagine I’m the first person to think it would be cool to drop a 1980s Volvo turbo engine in one of these, although according to VClassic, supercharging is a better choice. But right now, that’s all academic – today’s Volvo is available for $3500 in Oroville, CA.

Not Broken? 1972 Citroen DS 21 Safari

March 25, 2012

So maybe it’s the new baby in the house that I can blame for looking at wagons, or maybe it’s the fascination I’ve had with these since I can remember. I have vague memories of one of these being parked in the alley where my route manager used to drop copies of the Palo Alto Times Tribune when I was 12 (can you imagine now, letting a kid fold papers in an alley?). Anyway, I’ve been looking at these (and Corvair Lakewood wagons) when a pretty decent example popped up in the local craigslist. Being craigslist, though, you don’t always get top-notch photography, although it’s still more than you’d have got in the classifieds of the paper I delivered. So we have one picture and a short description by which to judge today’s feature. Today’s car is listed for sale in West Marin for the seemingly reasonable price of $3000.

Hipster’s Delight – 1976 Fiat 128 woody wagon

August 1, 2010

Well, we’ve covered plenty of Fiat 128s – apparently this is turning into a Fiat site. And there are definitely some weird ones out there – in their death throes in the US market, some poor Fiat dealer thought he could turn over a few more 128 wagons by putting simulated woodgrain panelling down the sides and back. The great thing is, fake wood is back in, in that ironic hipster way. And fake wood on a super-rare car… well, who could resist? Looking surprisingly tidy, check out the listing in W. Asheville, NC, for best offer… which means the seller can’t reconcile the amount of money he’s spent on the car versus what the market will give. Sound familiar?
