RPO Z09 – 1975 Chevrolet Vega Cosworth Twin Cam

September 15, 2014

Originally slated for a 185hp Cosworth 16-valve version of the Chevrolet Vega’s inline four, the final horsepower number was dumbed down from the original 1971 forecast to 140hp in 1973 and finally 110hp in 1975 at the car’s release. However, put yourself back in the early emissions-strangled dark days of 1975 – catalytic converters were a new requirement, and manufacturers were still learning how to reduce emissions without heavily impacting performance. Well, okay, they had not learned much yet, and to make things worse, the 1972 change to net horsepower ratings means converted to net hp, the original number could have been anywhere between 130-170hp. And with roughly similar cars putting out similar figures (see twincam Fiat and Alfa engines to get you started) the power numbers are actually pretty respectable. Chevy Tuesday – 1974 Chevrolet Vega Kammback GT

June 24, 2014

As discussed before here, the Vega is a pretty interesting car, for its unrealized potential, its design influences, and the innovation in its production. Unfortunately, as was often the case for GM in the 1970s, the potential of their ideas was often cut down in the execution, whether it be the fault of the accountants, the production team, or someone else. On the other hand, look at what happened to companies where engineering innovation (or difference for difference’s sake) was allowed to thrive – where is Saab? Where is Lancia? Where is NSU? Camaro Junior – 1973 Chevrolet Vega GT

March 26, 2014

The Chevy Vega is a much-maligned car that suffered a poor reputation due to a rush to market, which meant customers were guinea pigs for many of its innovative features. However, cars that have survived 40-plus years now have likely had any necessary updates made, and thanks to natural attrition, should work well as a stylish, unusual classic for which you can still get parts at your corner parts store. Check out this 1973 Chevrolet Vega GT for sale for $3500 in Duncanville, TX.
