Low Dollars Per Pound – 1966 Buick Special Wagon

December 14, 2015

If you’re looking to get the most metal for the fewest dollars, and the vintage truck option has been nixed, you can’t do any better than an older American wagon. Wagons of the 1950s with exciting features like fins and lots of chrome that are in relatively good condition have become popular and correspondingly expensive, but the same has not yet happened to 1960s and early 1970s wagons with relatively clean, uncluttered designs and improvements in safety, handling, and reliability. Which brings us to this 1966 Buick Special wagon for sale for $1750 in McCleary, WA.

Safety Orange – 1976 Mercury Capri II Pair

December 1, 2015

If you’re a music lover, you’ll most likely be familiar with the sensation of going back to an album you liked, but haven’t listened to in a long time, and rediscovering why you liked those songs or the musicians that created them. Part of the mission here is to do the same for once-popular (and sometimes not-so-popular) cars that have faded into obscurity, a good example of which is the Ford/Mercury Capri. The Capri was originally sold as the sexy European, but by the time the second generation car had arrived, the 2.3-liter car had gained 476 pounds over the original 1970 1.6 Kent-engined car, had lost several of the design flourishes of the original, and together with a new hatch, had matured into the “pleasantly plump and practical European”. Which might have been a great tagline for commercials, but a weakening dollar and the arrival of the Fox-body Mustang in 1978 meant North American Capris did not last long. Check out this 1976 Mercury Capri II for sale for $3000 in Rialto, CA.

Non-Profit – 1977 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT

November 28, 2015

Not many cars can get quite as crispy as an Alfetta GT, and for our turkey weekend, here’s a prime example, in that even cars that were carefully stored outdoors in a dry environment (okay, near an ocean, kind of) can end up pretty rusty. That said, an optimistic eye (hey, you’re reading this site, you have to be at least a partial optimist) will show plenty of surface rust, but not much serious structural rust, so hopefully that assessment will prove accurate. After all, ugly is fine, but it’s a little harder to compromise on things like your seat falling through the floor. Check out this 1977 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT for sale for $650 in Carmel Valley, CA.
