In a twist of coincidence, today’s other feature car is also powered by a flat four engine. Porsche 914s, once a budget sports car derided by enthusiasts of the genre as a VW-Porsche, have been sucked into the 356/911 frenzy as the next affordable car. Porsche 914/6s, never dirt cheap to begin with, are moving towards the mid-high five figures, while 914/4s are cresting $10,000. Fortunately, this trend is fairly recent, and if you’re willing to dig and put in a little effort, you can find some decent drivers out there for not-crazy money. Check out this 1972 Porsche 914/4 for sale in Santa Monica, CA for $3900.

Flat Four #2 – 1972 Porsche 914
December 5, 2013Countach Junior – 1974 Fiat X1/9
November 22, 2013Perhaps relating this humble sports car to a Countach is overdoing it a little. But give it a moment’s thought – how many early 1970s cars can you describe with the following attributes: angular wedge shape, mid-engine, Italian, and in a bright pale green on bright blue color scheme? Most people will think of a Miura or Countach when you list those off, but you can have a similar experience for much less. And it’s arguably more fun, since if you stuff it into a hedge you won’t have wrecked a six-figure car, even if these are probably equally rare. You can find this 1974 Fiat X1/9 for sale in Oakland, CA with bidding currently at $2225, reserve not met and just over one day left to go.
1979 Mazda RX-7
November 6, 2013Mazda just won’t give up. In 1967, they started selling the first Wankel rotary engine, having spent several years on developing the version they’d licensed from NSU. In 1970, due to low emissions, and in spite of high fuel and oil consumption, they brought the rotary engine to the United States. In the early half of the decade, Mazda’s rotary-powered lineup grew to several cars and a North-America-only pickup truck. However, the oil crisis put a stop to that, and Mazda reverted to regular piston-engined cars. However, they stuck with the idea, and in 1978, they unveiled the RX-7 sports car, which survived in three generations through 1995, followed by the 2003-2012 RX-8. Find this second-coming car, a 1979 Mazda RX-7 for sale for $2500, in Tacoma, WA.
