S2 vs. S4 – 1973 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce and 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce

January 6, 2016

Have you ever met two siblings and thought, could these people really have come from the same parents? If you haven’t, you’ll certainly find yourself saying it of the different generations of Alfa Spider. The 1971-1982 Series 2 (S2) Alfa Spider, while fairly comfortable and spacious in its cruising/touring role, is also a fairly raw, raucous sports car whose driving experience is dominated by a wonderful engine note and good handling dampened by cowl shake and live axle quirks. The 1991-1994 Series 4 (S4) Alfa Spider is the older brother, with slightly sharper engine response, stiffer platform, and a much more muted version of the Alfa twincam four, together with narrower leather/alcantara seating and all the electric conveniences and ease of use of a modern (ish) sports car of the 1990s. In spite of that, it has some archaic characteristics like the S2’s live axle peccadilloes, cowl shake, and narrow cabin. To get started, let’s check out this 1973 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce for sale for $3500 in San Francisco, CA.

Black Spiders – 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider Pair

October 26, 2015

You’ve heard it enough times, many classic cars are slipping out of the reach of mere mortals. Well sure, if you approach with a narrow focus, you can’t even get a project for under $10,000. But if you look carefully, and weigh your priorities, it doesn’t matter if you’ve got a little or a lot of money, as long as you can be diligent in your search and diligent with your tools. Conveniently, that supports the case for today’s pair of feature cars, both 1987 Alfa Romeo Spiders. Sure, in 1987, these cars seemed antiquated, but now you’re picking up a lot of the iconic 1960s style with upgrades like power windows, electronic fuel injection, and more. Which makes it like a Miata with more heritage and less bulletproof-ness. Check out this 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider Quadrifoglio for sale for $2700 in Chatsworth, CA.

Projects and Parts – Fiat 124 Spider, X1/9, 500 and 850 Spider

October 16, 2015

It’s time for a survey of some interesting Fiats available for sale. The first is this 1976 Fiat Spider for sale for $1850 in Long Beach, CA. There’s nothing fun like a classic car with a wacky paint job, and this is a great example. Was the painter going for patriotic Italian-American? Beach umbrella style? Curiously, there are auxiliary lights on the rear fenders, and the top frame needs adjustment or repair. It’s said to run and drive well, but not much more is provided in the way of details. Stripes mean nobody will run into you when you’re waiting for a tow.
