Back in 1973, when the Audi 80 debuted, your average Volkswagen had a horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, rear-wheel-drive, a frunk (and sometimes a trunk as well) (unless it’s a type 2), and a heating system based on channeling warmth from around the engine into the passenger compartment. Just around this time, VW had been on a buying spree, picking up NSU and Auto Union. This gave them the Audi 72 (based on the longitudinal-engine, front-wheel-drive DKW F103) and the NSU K70, a compact front-engine front-wheel drive sedan. These two cars netted VW the B1 Audi 80 and the VW Passat. Neither has survived in significant numbers in North America, but check out this 1977 Audi Fox for sale for $1450 in Hillsboro, OR.

February 17, 2015Inspirational – 1978 Alfa Romeo Alfetta Berlina
February 14, 2015It’s part of this site’s unofficial mission to feature every reasonably priced forlorn Alfetta out there, as the RustyButTrusty Alfetta GT was part of the inspiration for many of the cars featured here. That started with a lucky find in the storage lot of a trailer park, with a car that had some recent repairs but still looked rather rough. However, it was nearly complete and solid in many critical areas, and you can see what that turned into. Anyhow, let’s take a look at this 1978 Alfa Romeo Alfetta Berlina for sale for $1200 in Hazel Green, AL.
Mainstreaming – 1987 Peugeot 505 STX V6
January 28, 2015With the 505 being Peugeot’s attempt at being a little less weird, you could argue the PRV V6 powered 505 is the most milquetoast of them all. With a V6 pushing out 170hp, four doors, comfortable seating, and smart styling, on paper it was competitive with its contemporaries from BMW, Alfa, Saab, and more. However, by 1987, Peugeot’s reputation in the North American market was already cemented, and not in the best way. The PRV engine did not help either, other applications including the DeLorean and six-cylinder Volvo sedans, none of which had the greatest public perception of reliability. That said, any car that’s survived to the ripe old age of 28 will probably keep going with proper care and attention. Check out this 1987 Peugeot 505 STX V6 for sale for $2500 in Los Gatos, CA.
