Original Owner – 1976 VW Beetle

May 7, 2016

It’s interesting that VW was able to concurrently sell their iconic legacy product – the Beetle – at the same time as the more modern and better Rabbit. Imagine Honda selling their 1986 Civic alongside the 2016 model; though even this is not an accurate comparison, since VW had completely changed the fundamental concept of their entire product lineup between the senior and junior cars. And sure, by 1976 people were not exactly buying Beetles as fast as VW could make them, but you could still walk into a showroom and get something truly aged – perhaps the closest we are to this today are some of the American manufacturers’ products, like the Panther-platform cars (Crown Victoria / Town Car) or the Chevrolet/GMC vans, but these are only half as old and not facing more modern competition in the same class from their own manufacturers. Risky Business – 1995 Mercedes C36 AMG

May 6, 2016

In many ways there’s nothing more costly than a 21-year-old Mercedes, but the flip side of the risk is the massive depreciation. And while we’re taking risks, why not consider cars with salvage titles? As fans of old European orphan cars know, massive depreciation means even a small shunt will get an otherwise decent car written off. And just like that, you can get a generally decent top-of-the-line sedan for really short money. Check out this 1995 Mercedes C36 AMG for sale for $3500 in San Francisco, CA.

Bookending the War – 1941 Oldsmobile Dynamic 78

May 5, 2016

When you spend the better part of a morning under the hood battling emissions equipment in a small car, it’s nice to think what life might be like with a large car that has no emissions equipment whatsoever, unless you count the exhaust system. No matter how cool, no modern car has the same visual impact as a prewar model with (nearly) separate fenders, a tall grill, and Rubenesque styling. And the fun thing with one of these that’s unrestored is it’s a bit like that grandma house on the block that hasn’t been on the market since the fifties – it’s a bit musty, and a bit dim, but you can just feel the past 60 years in its walls. With that, let’s take a look at this 1941 Oldsmobile Dynamic 78 for sale for $4500 in San Francisco, CA.
