Depreciation King – 1989 Mercedes 300CE

March 10, 2016

If you’re looking for a youngtimer, to borrow the German term, that will remind you what made Mercedes great, pulls off the coupe transition far better than some of its contemporaries (here’s looking at you, Bertone Volvos), and will not inconvenience you with the ailments of a pre-emissions, carbureted car, it’s hard to go wrong with the Mercedes W124 coupes. Their sedan siblings have a durable if rather stodgy reputation, and while the driving experience doesn’t change with the transition to two door hardtop, the style certainly changes for the better. There is a surprising number of these available in the $5000-10,000 range, but what about something more accessible? How about this 1989 Mercedes Benz 300CE for sale for $3495 in Providence, RI?

Snow White – 1988 VW Scirocco 16V

March 5, 2016

There were lots of popular things to do in the 1980s. For car enthusiasts, one of those things was copying Ferrari Testarossas. Pickup trucks got side strakes. Alfas got 5-spoke star wheels from the factory. And plenty of cars got pop-up headlights, though the Testarossa was not the only one influencing this trend. Tuner cars got wide, boxy fenders with wheels to match and louvers over their tail lights. For a taste of some (questionable) 1980s aesthetics blended with some updates, check out this 1988 VW Scirocco 16V for sale for $3500 in Portland, OR.

Schwarz Sport – 1986 Porsche 944

March 4, 2016

Porsche’s 944 offers an accessible yet iconic Porsche experience. It may not be a 911, but let’s face it, 911s were never this accessible, or this user-friendly. And the 944 offers cool 1980s design cues including a molded glass hatch, box flares, and flip-up headlights. Torque from the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is good, and the rear transaxle makes for a well-balanced car – the only similar offering in the 1980s was Alfa Romeo’s GTV6. Finding a good example of either under our self-imposed price cap is a bit of a challenge, though, so it’s nice when one comes up – let’s have a look at this 1986 Porsche 944 for sale for $3800 in McMinnville, OR.
