Le Slow – 1980 Peugeot 504 Break Diesel

January 14, 2015

Something about the French cars this week – there’s generally no tie-in with the news here, and claiming that there was would be a lie, but it’s a strange coincidence that several interesting ones are available. In this case, there’s a car, and should you choose to accept it, a business plan. The plan goes like this: 1) Buy Peugeot 504 Diesel wagon; 2) Ship it in a container to your preferred African country, preferably a former French colony; 3) Sell the Peugeot 504 for a fat profit! What could possibly go wrong? There’s even a parts car to pad your margins with. Check out this 1980 Peugeot 504 Diesel Wagon for sale for $800 in Sebastopol, CA.

Le Four-Door – 1983 Renault LeCar

January 9, 2015

AMC/Chrysler has had many a relationship with foreign automakers – Alfa Romeo, Hillman, Talbot/Peugeot, Renault, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, and Fiat. Renault could be considered one of the manufacturers who ultimately didn’t benefit from the relationship, so here’s the last car they imported to the United States before the ill-fated, Motor-Trend-Car-of-the-Year-winning Alliance/Encore – the Renault LeCar. Covered on these pages in the past as a revolutionary super-mini, and significant for Renault, and in Europe, it didn’t fare quite as well as some of the imported competition, including the VW Rabbit and all those “putains Japonais” who ate the French manufacturers’ baguette sandwiches while they weren’t looking. French failure in the American automotive market notwithstanding, there are still some great examples of the great Renault 5 – check out this 1983 Renault LeCar, with bidding currently at $1647 and four days left to go in Roanoke, VA.

Idee Guimbard – 1961 Citroen ID19

December 31, 2014

For as many Citroen DS/ID cars as were built, you’d think the supply would dictate a fairly low price. However, there seems to be enough interest in these that a nice driver is around $10-20K. Anything lower than that usually gets you a backyard special, baked with love under the California sun. With some patience, though, you can find a driver with cosmetic needs – call it a driver project, a jalopy, or une guimbarde. Check out this 1961 Citroen ID19 for sale for $3500 in Berkeley, CA.
