In the search for oddballs, you sometimes have to look in the most obvious places. Supposing you wanted a three-door wagon. No, not a 2-door wagon, there are plenty of those, and definitely not a 4-door wagon (by the way, this whole thing of counting the hatch as a “door” is just ridiculous – it’s the hatch, not a door). The only production 3-door wagon (yes, this is your invitation to find others) is the Chevrolet Suburban, specifically the 7th generation truck (or the second of the C/K generations). People make a big deal of the AMC Pacer or the Renault 16 being asymmetric (doors and wheelbase, respectively), but this truck is just as deserving of recognition, as you could see it in two pictures and think it’s a different truck. Check out this 1969 Chevrolet Suburban, for sale for $3700 in Lake County, CA.

June 24, 2014Swedish Monday – 1978 Saab 99 EMS
June 23, 2014If the lines of the classic Volvo 240 seem too ordinary, or too square, consider the Swedish alternative – Saab. It offers a competitive capacity for all your stuff, greater sporting lineage, and is wrapped in arguably more creative styling. That said, it’s still quite utilitarian in the Swedish idiom, with simple, clean styling and longevity that can equal its Volvo compatriots. Due to their shorter production lifespan, fewer Saab 99s remain, so when one comes up for sale, it’s almost compulsory to feature it here. Take a look at this 1978 Saab 99 EMS for sale for $2200 in North Albany, OR.
Swedish Monday – 1983 Volvo 240 Turbo
June 23, 2014Fourteen years after Volvo transitioned away from the box as a template for their cars, it’s hard for many kids to remember a time where their kind were ferried around from soccer practice to camp to swimming in box-shaped people movers with spartan interiors, turbocharged engines if your parents were cool, and a public radio sticker in the back window. But from the late 1960s all the way through about 2000, this shape defined the Volvo experience, and it’s arguably more iconic than any other Volvo design, even if the others are prettier or more adventurous. You can find this 1983 Volvo 240 Turbo wagon for sale for $2300 in Portland, OR.
