Let’s face it – while the E30 is recognized by some as the last real BMW, or (take your pick) cult classic, future classic, or “modern” 2002, it’s still a fairly common used car, at least in the drier states. Finding one requires sifting through piles of beaters, and once you get through that you might also want to eliminate the automatic transmission cars from consideration, as well as the iX models with the needlessly complex all-wheel-drive, and the early 318i with its gutless four-cylinder. That really doesn’t leave very many cars, so it’s nice to find a clean, affordable car with a manual transmission and a top that goes down. Kind of. Final Year – 1992 BMW 325iC
July 11, 2014Tastefully Modified – 1991 BMW 318i
February 2, 2014You can easily find E30 BMWs under $4000, but most often they’re poorly modified, banged up, high mileage, or a combination of those. It’s also harder to find affordable E30s with manual transmission, particularly in the 4-door version. And sure, 4-doors aren’t the coolest, but when you’re trying to spread the classic sporty-car gospel, you gotta have enough doors to give your friends easy access. Because like it or not, even the last of the E30 BMWs are now 22 years old! Sure, with electronic fuel injection, air conditioning, and electrical stuff (what? you can push a button and the window goes down?!), they don’t feel old, but the clock doesn’t stop ticking. You can find this 1991 BMW 318i for sale for $3900 in Encino, CA.
E30 is the new 02 – 1988 BMW 325is
September 18, 2013It’s probably no revelation to anyone reading here that BMW’s E10 series of cars (2002s, 1600s, and their derivatives) are rising in price. And it’s probably also no surprise that while the E10’s successor, the E21 (sold in 320i and 320is form in North America) is not so prized by enthusiasts due to a less-than-exciting driving experience, that car’s replacement was a great comeback for BMW. The E30, initially released as the BMW 318i, soon sprouted a 6-cylinder engine and a 4-door version, as well as a touring (station wagon) version not sold in North America. You can find today’s 1988 BMW 325is listed for $3000 in west San Jose, CA.
