If you think the world is running out of cheap Alfas waiting to be rejuvenated, step back, Jack, because a diligent search in the online listings will turn up cars that don’t require you to find reproductions of parts last made in the 1960s, but also don’t need you to walk on eggshells after purchase for fear the timing belt might snap/slip, and make your engine do a mashup that’s decidedly uncool. Not a Krupp – 1966 Ford Mustang

Back in the 1960s, the German truck builder Krupp held the rights to the Mustang model name, and demanded $10,000 from Ford so they could sell their similarly-named car there. Copyright law certainly exists for good reasons, and owners are encouraged to protect their rights, but who in their right minds will confuse a Krupp Mustang semi-tractor with a Ford Mustang sports coupe? Ford Mustangs are rarely featured here, not due to any shortcoming of their own, but because their enduring popularity means most are not within our self-imposed budget cap. And that’s a shame, because much like, say, a BMW 2002, this is a people’s sports car, as well as a cultural icon, with plenty of upgrade and restoration parts available for all the trim levels. Even the humble T-code six, like this 1966 Ford Mustang for sale for $4300 in Vacaville, CA.

A Little Fitchy – 1965 Chevrolet Corvair 500 Coupe

If you’ll indulge one more rear-engined American feature (come to think of it, are there any others your average person can buy?), the real lookers of the Corvair family are the second series car. Given the whole legal mess, the introduction of the Chevy II compact, and slim profit margins, it’s a bit of a miracle the second generation even made it to production. But thank goodness it did, because while the first generation car certainly had strong influence on car designers, German ones especially, the second generation was arguably the best looking economy car ever built in America. Maybe that sounds like a back-handed compliment, but it’s not meant that way – creating an economy car that’s fun and good looking is not something many manufacturers have achieved.
